Thick nylon ripstop is durable stuff. Just as long lived or more than high quality leather. It just can tear a bit easier. All leather requires maintenance, regardless of quality. It loses moisture and will crack.

That's a bit hard to say, even without maintenance the leather may last way longer than a nylon bag. Depends on what leather is used of course, it's not all the same.
I think main issue with leather is the weight...

Id go Filson canvas or north face base camp for small duffles

I’ve had a chrome messenger bag for over 10 years and it’s still perfect.

30k on that dinky piston is incredible. Probably run ragged too, it’s hard not to as they don’t have gobs of power.
Love my Honda, hopefully it lasts half that long.

Have one too. Sadly I let it sit too long and all the fuel lines are gummed up. Ack. Totally my fault.

Nylon if you're going to use planes.

Nylon will be lighter and better with water obviously. Leather is a bit more durable around sharp/rough objects…. Leather requires maintenance, nylon doesn’t.
Personally I’d go nylon because the weight and weaknesses of leather, but it depends how you use it and what you value.

I prefer nylon for being washable. Easier to clean if something explodes in or on your bag. Plus I don't like having flash looking luggage.

There is a guy on TikTok making a charity/awareness ride across Canada in the winter right now and doing it on a vintage Big Red. Bulletproof is an understatement on these on work horses.

Have you looked at the Oreck commercial line? The XL is a very simple design that has a very good reputation of reliability. For someone not worried about bagged vs. bagless and simply looking for a good vacuum that is designed to vacuum carpets and doesn't add on a lot of mumbo jumbo that can break, these might be ones to consider. My friend's mother has had her Oreck for at least several decades.

My dad has 2 of them in green. I think the same year as well. They have withstood a lot of abuse & still going strong

What you are looking for are wide mouth glass jars. What is great about them other than they last for multiple lifetimes is that you can vacuum seal them too.

Quality matters, some types of leather can go on for years and years with no maintenance. Depends a lot on the tanning process. On a bag, it also does not fold much and isn't folded nearly as often as on clothing or footwear...
