I had a winix 5500 that is now relegated to a spare bedroom where my litter box is. Why? It developed a really annoying unbalanced fan that made this really annoying sound. I got a Coway next and it’s whisper quiet and true hepa.

Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) True... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01728NLRG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I really like how the Coway looks in my bedroom also. Keep in mind one downside is there is a blue led that you cannot turn off. The winix had a night mode where the lights turned off. The light personally doesn’t bug me but you could always put some tape over it if it bugged you.

I almost went with Blue air filter based on a YouTube video I watched a while back but decided against it simply because blue has these proprietary filters that aren’t true HEPA.

You bet!

And from what I understand the version of the story you heard is correct. The other brands carried at Magnolia at the time were much larger operations and could handle the increase in volume that came much better. Vienna had something like 25 employees at the the time, and there was no way it was going to work. Sumiko (their US distributor) ended up dropping them entirely since Magnolia was their only retail contract. It’s a shame.

Gorgeous piece of kit!

Good audio equipment is definitely BIFL!

My NAD head unit isn't in the same league, but is a quality piece that should last for life as well. It's from the 90's, I bought it used about 10 years ago, and it still works perfectly!

I don't deliberately seek out BIFL clothing, but I find that I can get a lot of wear from "regular" brands. A decent % of my wardrobe dates back 10+ years. Even my cheapo ($15) TJ Maxx jeans are good for at least 5 years before getting all saggy/frumpy. Is it still "fast fashion" at that point? *shrugs*

But to summarize my experience...

GOOD:

-Blundstone boots (it hasn't been 10 years, but I've worn the same pair most days for the last 5-ish years and they're holding up great)

-Brooks Brothers shirts (I'm wearing the same collared shirts that I bought for interviews right out of college)

-WHBM dresses (a LBD from 2010 is still my go-to cocktail dress)

-Smartwool socks and mittens

And pretty good luck from J Crew, Boden, LL Bean so far, including an LL Bean athletic shirt that I've often worn climbing since 2015/2016.

With darn tough, I appreciate their thicker hiking socks, but I can wear toe holes in the thin ones pretty quickly.

Also kind of random, my aunt bought me a Tommy Hilfiger shirt in middle school. I haven't grown much since age 12, and I STILL wear that plain, long-sleeved T all the time (mostly as a PJ shirt, but it's crazy to think how many washes that's been through).

NOT GOOD:

-Sperry boots (mine were cracked and leaking in less than a year)

-Everlane (all the tops I've gotten have been incredibly thin material, and the sweaters developed holes after just a few wears)

-Kotn was another brand I wanted to like, but their sizing was tiny to start with...and then shrank horribly in the wash

oh man. i can still remember the first time i auditioned a pair of Vienna Acoustics. they were some of the only speakers i can recall giving me a deep emotional reaction. and those were only bookshelves! i cant imagine what yours must sound like.

I know that Magnolia Audio Video used to carry them many years back but Vienna had to pull out of the stores because they couldn’t build the speakers as fast as they were selling, and didnt want the brand to suffer from lack of craftsmanship (or so the story was told to me).

i bet you’ll enjoy those and the McIntosh forever and ever - thanks for sharing!

In this case? Yes, with a “but”

I replaced the amp in a nice ($1200)Denon receiver with the MC275, and the difference was instantly noticeable, and far more pleasing to my ear.

That said, tube amps tend to be less accurate than solid state amps, so while it may sound better to my ear, it’s not as close to the original recording as solid state. Think of it like Vaseline on a camera lens. It hides imperfections, but isn’t necessarily true to the original source.

There are more modern tube amps that most would agree sound better than the MC275, but they’re in the same price range (if not higher), and don’t have the same aesthetic appeal.
