Came here to mention them. Not necessarily good looking but they are very long lasting. There is a reason why probably 9 of every 10 pilots use them.

Lamy is a good option.

I'm a big fan of my Danner Light II boots. Super comfy and waterproof.
I wear 'em hiking and in the office.

If you want something unique, try KarasKustoms or Tactile Turn. Machined pens that will last a lifetime.

Reply to Are Von Baer bags worth it? by edgewisefeather663
People on the r/frugal subs would freak out a bit, haha, but yeah, I've heard that Von Baers are worth it. If there are luxury items that are actually practical, these are definitely somewhere in between, and the three people I know who own at least one of them have been using them for years now. Let me know what you think.

I leave mine on the radiator for a couple of days every few weeks or so. I know some people say you shouldn't do that but I have been doing it for years and never had any problems. Just helps to keep mold away from inside the boot in my experience and the boots feel nicer inside and out.

I'm glad I got a Von Baer as a gift (not the carry-on, but it looks cool as well), as I probably wouldn't have gotten into higher-priced fashion myself. Looking back, items like these are worth the investment, as in """"it will last you decades,"""" not """"years.""""

Well, I know it is a bit pricy, but my dad has one with him every time we meet, so I guess if you're into the style, it's worth it (as the quality and materials are p much as good as they come).

Reply to Daily use server industry shoes by CadeVision
For me, speaking as a chef (12 hour shift 5-6 days/week) Dansko is by far the safest and most comfortable for all day wear & support.... been in the industry 15 years, I've tried SAS, Sketchers, Crocs, Doc Martin's, Birkenstocks, shoes for crews, Rockport, and a few others, but Dansko shoes are money well spent, they don't come with any crazy warranty as far as I know but they hold up to wear better than any other I've tried

Been using mine since right after the covid travel restriction was lifted, and it still looks as good as new. The quality of the leather is matched only by brand bags from Italy, while the price seems much more reasonable, so I think you'll get a lot out of it.

We love ours. I'm so bummed to hear they discontinued it. I'm sure whatever they replaced it with is fine, but the Ektorp was both comfy and sturdy without being ugly.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I like bimmers, I just don't like working on them. Benz's from the 90's were just built immaculately and german-car-electrical-gremlins aside were impossible to kill.
I'm just traumatized from helping friends work on E36 m3's when I was in high school/college.

My ektorp sectional just passed 10 years and it truly has held up. We have the white slipcover and I think the fact that we can bleach the covers is part of what makes it still look so good.

The problem is always that quality goes down once a product gets a good reputation. It takes years or over a decade before it finally loses that reputation.

Reply to comment by fernspore in Sock math (the case for buy it for life socks) by Johnpecan
I do, but that’s why I bought them to begin with. Of course I wait until I have 3 pairs to send back to make it more economicall. I tend to like their thickest most cushioned socks T4033 socks which also are their most expensive socks and I have found these tend to wear out quicker for me. Currently they are $31.00 a pair so returning them are a no brainer as far as I’m concerned. Since I’m retired I also wear them inside the house a bit as well which might help account for some of that wear.

We’ve had several crack around the rim when lifting them, especially when emptying litter boxes. Still looking for a good thin metal one that would be lightweight but strong.
