We went through these with the bad bushfires a few years ago. My main suggestion is pick one where the filters are readily available. Ideally you'll buy a lot more filters than purifiers...

We shopped on ebay, and bought several smaller ones from one of the more recognisable Chinese brands (seems to be a newer model but same filters) that takes a filter that seemed to have more than one manufacturer. I bought extra filters with them, then a year later when we had an idea of how many we used/how long they lasted did a bulk order (10!) and three years later they got us through the worst of the pandemic and I still have a couple left.

(if you want VOC etc removed you need to get activated charcoal filters, plain HEPA ones are not enough - HEPA is a particulate standard)

Dyson makes some very good options but they are pricey. My former coworker and friend from Best Buy (he’s been an appliance guy for 30 yrs) recommends them as long you are not price concerned. Almost forgot but make sure you plug it into a surge protector anything over $200 or something you don’t want to replace occasionally should be.

Blimey. I went looking for a grinder after i dropped my 10 year old bifl one and the acrylic broke. Found an Oak mill with a Peugeot mechanism at a thrift store for a couple of bucks and bought it home thinking; "huh, this looks old, who knew Peugeot make pepper grinders". Its been working great. I had no idea they were a thing.

I am sure these are super strong and durable but I've seen such grinders shed a shard of ceramic onto the food which i found very dangerous. If it's not metal, it doesn't pull it for me.

I just donated my 8” (or so) Peugeot pepper mill. Maybe someone here will find it :-)

Peugeot grinders are all metal for the pepper design and metal and ceramic for the salt version. I have a wood set I bought a few years ago that's still going strong, very well made.

It will last longer with a cover. I also replace the the flavorizer bars 1-2 years depending on use. I grill on average once a week, year round. I’m going on six years, and mine still looks pretty much new. You

Also, 'artisanal' salts like Himalayan pink often come in large grains and need grinding. I don't personally believe they're really appreciably different from what you get in a canister of Morton's, but but some people swear by them.

Pretty sure I found these at target a year ago. Love them, but they do seem to generate a lot of plastic dust around the head that you notice when you remove it and add more salt or pepper.

I use a wet paper towel to clean it up when I refill. Recommend everyone else do the same until you get wooden grinders.

Luckily I got mine when they were still all metal construction. But I agree, plastic components don't hold up.

You know, I just came back to this, and I have to add: I described the eastern OR soil as fine sand. It wasn't sand-like at all. It was dust-like. Incredibly fine. It would stain my work socks.
