BIFL tier: 66 north, feathered friends, fjallraven, Canada goose, Carhartt Yukon extremes.

For those temps I think either a parka or layering a down puffer with a shell would be fine.

Warmest jacket would be something like the 66 north Jokla. But those are for really more for Arctic conditions, it's overkill for getting the mail in the Michigan suburbs.

Had a Henkels classic 8 inch knife I got used over 10 yrs ago. A few months ago I took it out of the block and somehow bobbled it. Fell tip down on counter and the scales popped off in addition to damaging the tip. In a pinch I got the 8” Mercer with white handle. $10. I’m surprised how much I like it. I like it way more than my victorinox I had because this things got heft.

The LCD display is much more sensible than what we often get today : the figures are easy to read, thanks to a nice ratio between height and width and a thin line. Also, the seconds are smaller.

Many contemporary LCD displays are offensively ugly and difficult to read : with exceedingly narrow figures, thick lines and very obvious gaps between sections.

I'm thinking of some measuring instruments (not cheap items, either).

It probably partly depends which ones you are talking about. So far the women's carpenter pants, the doublefront overalls, and the shorts have been great! They have outlasted the Carhartt and Duluth by quite a lot. How long they will last you is pretty personal and depends what your use case is. If you are just a weekend warrior doing yardwork, they are likely to last a very long time. Doing farming and logging, I only got six month out of those stupid Duluth and less than a year out of Carhartt.

I've worked HVAC, cabinetry and landscaping I do think there more durable then most and they are my oldest set of work pants but I perfer my Duluth and my Wolverines more mostly due to the cut of the pockets and depth it's just easier to get my knife and wallet out. My Dickes are at least two years old and while they look worn they hold up alright

What's your budget? Hop onto carbonknifeco / chefknifestogo / bernal cutlery (three shops in the USA I have used and trust) and start looking, any knife you buy from one of those places will be BIFL with proper care. I personally like supporting independent or smaller artisan blacksmiths, but there's some great stuff from big names as well.

If you have the budget and want a known quantity, look at the bob Kramer (super well known American blacksmith) zwilling line. Basically his designs produced to his specs by zwilling in Japan. Great western style knife with Japanese steel.
