Respect, check it! Da National Weather Service just dropped a bombshell! They be saying that we gonna get some serious snowfall startin' 6pm on Monday, and it ain't gonna stop until Tuesday 6pm. And we ain't talkin' 'bout no light dustin', nah! Dis snow gonna be heavy and mixed with some sleet, especially near da coast. You best believe it's gonna pile up like a fat blunt, yo, to da tune of 5 to 8 inches! So be ready, cuz it's gonna be hazardous out there, like me on da mic when I first started rappin'.

So this will finally be my first winter storm with a driveway. I'm right on the border between 1-3 and 4-6", probably with some sleet. What do I need to do? Just salt?

Big brush attachment for weed Wacker or old fashion snow shovel to remove snow then salt after the storm is over and done shoveling. Good luck. The sooner you deal with sleet, wet snow, the less likely it'll freeze solid where you don't want it. Bigger snow storms might be easier to shovel twice, in the middle of the storm and again right after it's over.

This is personal preference and different from other advice you might get, but if you are able to shovel (and depending on the size of your driveway), I would keep a shovel handy and shovel every 2” or so just to make it less labor-intensive. It’s easier to push around an inch or two than to do 4-6” all at once. If it starts as sleet, I would try to shovel that off as soon as it changes to snow so it doesn’t ice over and make your life more difficult. If it starts as snow, I would shovel off the first inch or so and wait for it to finish to do the rest. Finish off with salt at the end to keep any deleterious material from freezing over. Just salting is good for an inch or so. Good luck!

Hopefully you have fresh gas and put gasoline stabilizer in the fuel. Otherwise you might be spending some time getting her started. Blame the awful 10% ethanol fuel for any starting issues for snowblowers, worst thing for small engines ever.

Don’t make the mistake I made with my sidewalk in my first year as a homeowner — if you salt first, the bottom layer will thaw into a slushy mess while the snow is still falling, but then it will turn into ice, making it harder to remove even if the rest of the snow layer on top is fluffy. You want to use salt to break the crust on top of the snow to make removal easier, not create a bottom crust.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Just a reminder to please be kind to your neighbors — especially letter carriers, delivery drivers and healthcare workers, grocery workers, etc. We are still going to and from work in this and may be parking farther from home tonight and tomorrow morning due to parking bans. Please don’t shout at us for taking “your” on-street parking spots (this has happened to me before), and please clear your sidewalks — it’s the law, but it also helps keep us “essential workers” from busting ass on ice.

glacialerratical t1_ja8720d wrote

The salt helps keep your nice, freshly-shoveled driveway from icing over once the snow has stopped, and helps the remainders melt more quickly in the sun. But it's not going to melt 6 inches of snow. Plus you don't want to dump it all in your yard if you can help it.

The plow trucks use it, but they're also using sand and plowing.

Respect! I'm glad I made your day, but just remember, I can't control the weather, I ain't no weatherman. I just read what they tell me to read, ya get me? But I appreciate the encouragement to follow my dreams, maybe one day I'll become a professional meteorologist, or maybe I'll stick to my day job of being a top-notch interviewer and rapper. Either way, I'll keep hustlin' and makin' moves, and you keep stayin' positive and spittin' those good vibes! Keep it real.

Always but thank you for mentioning it. I never put gas in the can for the mower or blower without adding stabilizer.

Frankly I was getting ready to drain the blower so that I could put that gas into one of the older cars (no reason to waste it).

I grew up close enough to Snowbasin to see the lift towers from my back yard. My buddy and I used to hike up there every Saturday and ski the Strawberry side for free. They didn't check tickets over on that side because you had to ride a lift to get there. Tickets were only about $15 back then, so we would recycle cans and secretly save lunch money to occasionally buy a ticket and ski the rest of the mountain. Easily the most underrated resort out there.

DicmoVolant t1_ja8g7q4 wrote

I miss it terribly, but due to many injuries, my ski bum days are over. Now I kayak/ice fish instead, and I'm much more upset about the lack of lake ice this winter. I work per diem as a snow shoveler and I haven't had to do it yet this year, so that's been nice. This storm will be the wet snow that sucks to shovel.

fprintf t1_ja8u882 wrote

Yes. So back in the "old" days gas would break down after a few months and become unstable, clogging up the carburetor as it basically came out of mixture and some of the components of the gas evaporated off. So stabilizer was invented that lets you store gas for up to 2 years. Anyone who stores engines was encouraged to use stabilizer on gas you get from a pump (as opposed to the expensive $20 a gallon synthetic stuff you buy in a can at the hardware store)

However the bright minds here in CT moved us all to E10, 10% ethanol fuel. Ethanol is very hygroscopic, meaning is absorbs water. That water/alcohol mix is terrible for engine components and often, but not always, means engines are very hard to start after sitting for a while. This is especially true because the water/alcohol is heavier than the gas, so it settles to the bottom of the tank and if there is enough of it your engine simply won't run on water.

The solution is to put stabilizer in any fuel that goes in your small engines, and when you add that fuel to the tank make sure that the engine runs for a bit before you store it so the fuel gets all the way into the engine. (I'll add, most 2 stroke oils are considered a stabilizer which is why their fuel can seem to go years without causing a problem).

Best go out and start your snowblowers before this evening! Most times when mowers and snow blowers come into my friend's shop from not running it is from clogged carb parts and they always fail at the worst time... before a storm or after 2 weeks of rain when you just have to get the lawn mowed!

DZChaser t1_ja8vf41 wrote

if its just a small flurry, yes pre salting will help. but, if its a full snow storm its a waste of time and money because it will be over whelmed with snow and melt underneath doing nothing or will be shoveled or plowed into a snow bank and have to salt again. if you dump a lot in one area it may work.
