Now that I know what to look for, I can see the wings are snapped off. Must have given way. I assume I can just pick up another one at the hardware store, rotate so it’s behind some drywall, and pop it in?

It looks like you already have an old work box, which is what you need if there is no stud. It's possible the wings just got pushed in and thats why it fell, or they ripped through the drywall because there is a chunk missing there. If you remove the fixture you should be able to see the screws to clamp it back and you can just rotate everything so the wings are secure behind undamaged drywall. (When you rotate the box you will have to adjust the fixture mount to keep it level)

Drum sanders are not forgiving, if you rent one, I will guarantee you will have drum marks in your finished floor.

Rent the heaviest orbital sander they have, then when you think you're done, keep going, then when you run out of sand paper, go back to Home Depot and buy some more and keep going. The orbital sander will take a lot of time, but is the best option for DIY.

1982 is very unlikely that this is unfinished hardwood. No one in the 80s would have spent money on hardwood just to carpet it. Unlike the 1920s, plywood subfloors were already a thing in the 80s and would be what you find under carpet from that time.

More likely than not this is finished hardwood, just worn.

Now that it's taken apart, does the knob and spindle rotate without issues? If yes, then the latch is your problem. Next, see if the latch moves freely. If it doesn't, clean and re-lube. If both parts work good while taken apart, then the assembly on the door was the problem, i.e. mounted too tight/at an angle etc.

Amsterdam.

Has Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Zoe Saldana, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor Joy, Robert Deniro, Chris Rock, Taylor Swift, Mike Myers, and Michael Shannon.

Such a star-studded cast. It's unbelievable how bad it is. And it's not like some "so bad it's good" sort of movie. It's really just bad. Like so so bad. Don't watch it. I'm afraid that by telling you this, it makes you want to watch it. Do not waste the 2 hours of your life.

Go read some reddit reviews of it. Don't watch it.

I am going to comment on the stitch welds, but not because they're low quality or lazy or anything like that. I'm a bridge engineer, so I tend to have an eye for corrosion-susceptible details. With the stitch weld as it is, water can get in between the joints between the welds which can lead to accelerated pack rust. Going to a continuous weld will keep water out of those areas that trap and likely improve the life of the structure.
