I think people were only surprised because Australia does not extend as south as Argentina and Chile.
InDaHou5e t1_j4dlj3k wrote
Austral is simply another word for southern. How Australia got named. The same phenomenon can be seen from Argentina and Chile. I got the impression that some people thought that it was called that because of the country the photo was taken.

Yeah, you'll have to keep track on sun flares and when we have really big one check on weather and pray that there no clouds and it's winter. So many things have to line up.

Thanks, no, this is a photo I took myself. It has been edited in lightroom but nothing added. Mostly just raised the shadows and a bit of balancing the colour

I think I do. I was referring to the name a. australis as opposed to the northern lights. I meant it's in Australia (for the benefit of our northern hemisphere friends). WA is fking huge and it could only be seen right at the southern extreme I would bet. Tasmania is really the only regular sighting place in Australia, being furthest south.

There's desert sand dunes, but they're not as ubiquitous in our desert areas as they are in e.g. the Sahara or other deserts in Africa. I don't know where this was taken, but considering your best chance of seeing the Southern Lights is as far south as possible (therefore on the coast), these are likely to be large beach sand dunes instead.

But it is pretty rare, no? I mean Australia isn't as far south as Europe and North America are north. New York state is further north in latitude than Melbourne is south in latitude and the Aurora Borealis is pretty rare even up near the Canadian border.
