I visited during monsoon season (August) just to experience it. Downtown has an awesome crepes place, there are several museums like the Ice Museum and the one at the university. You can take a train to Anchorage the goes by Denali IIRC, and you can drive or take a tour bus up to the arctic circle marker. There are a fair number of bars. There’s a military base somewhere in the area based on the number of uniforms I saw in the airport.

No restrictions in general; some viewing sections are closed and where you can walk/view is clearly outlined.

The most notable thing was how hazy the western side of the island was. If the irruption is still going, you won’t get very good stargazing at night. Which I was kinda disappointed about. But the lava made up for it!

If it is still flowing 100% and go at night. Visit the NP during the day also, but see the lava at night. It’s significantly more stunning.

when I went there last fall, it wasn't like that. groups of 5-10 with a guide, and they space them out far enough that your group has a whole section of the canyon to youtselves. it started as a covid policy, but they kept it because it's great for photo taking and the like. I actually quite like that they do it that way, crowds ruin the experience for me.

yes, you have to pay to go there, and they pack in way too many people at once.
you pretty much walk through the canyon as if you were queuing to get in there.

it is also good that they it this way, it lets a lot more people experience it first hand. the wave for example is the complete opposite.
