They're actually dolomitized sponge reefs that grew around a volcanic core (a setting similar to the Bahamas today, but then with sponges instead of corals), mostly from the Triassic and Jurassic. The entire tectonic plate they're on got squashed between Europe and Africa, causing it to be uplifted, but without deforming it.
You're basically looking at what the seafloor looked like ~150 million years ago.

You can drive in if you have a hotel there. Highly recommended for sunrise/sunset.

Was this a drone shot? It looks pretty high off of the landscape.

That's not true. Golden Hour is after the sun rise or before the sun set. Blue Hour is before the sun rise and after the sun sets.

Absolutely love NEPA! I just moved to Colorado from PA and one of the last things I did before moving here was go to Ricketts Glenn State Park. The trail is easy as can be and the whole time you’re right next to a nice creek that has MULTIPLE waterfalls on the trail.
Sinnemahoning is also a gem with worlds end state park. Appalachia is beautiful.

That's ballsy! How do you get down the glacier in the dark then drive back to your hotel in the dark in the wild icelandic weather 🤯
