Sorry I didn't mean you. You guys clearly know the area. I just wanted to hang a sign for anyone else who thought of the state first and went "huh, that's out of the way."
Open to how I could have signaled that better.

Oh I’m very much aware. Spent almost a decade working at a summer camp east of Eveleth, taking nights off to go to movies and Target and The Sawmill in Virginia, MN. I’ve gone so far as to lead ropes course team building for a couple years for the Virginia college football team.

FYI: Virgina, MN is a town north of Deluth.

Justin Vernon was on my flight to Boston a few years ago and certainly looked like a Northwoods fella. His music is obligatory up here.

It is! You could also check out BoomTown for some local brews.

I did 30 miles with a group in August and stopped at Thunder Point, visibility was 10 miles. It's absolutely breathtaking.

Love the pic! I now live for the BWCA, been up there for at least a week straight each of the last 6 years and I still can't get enough of it.

Most of my trips have been mid September until the end of October. I’m geared for the weather and like the added adventure of it. There was only one year of what I would call a snow storm, with strong winds and around 4” total. But good timing, with the next day being our take our day and just a few portages.
I was the first part of October this year out of Kawishiwi Lake. Few bugs and people.

After a second look, it’s not Winchell. But beautiful none the less.

Ahhh. Looks like Winchell Lake looking north and slightly west. If it is, I’ve camped at that point campsite a few times over the decades. Mostly in October though.

Oh wow that's sad. I know that lake is the water source for a lot of towns who have no restrictions on use.

Is the Sawmill restaurant still there? Haven’t been through Virginia in many many years.

The autofocus is not reliable at all. That among a few other features (e.g. battery life, internal intervalometer missing, poorer color balance, etc.) is why I would recommend investing in a newer a7r model if money is no issue. I usually use AF to get in a general range of sharpness and then go manual from there to dial it in a bit more. Nevertheless, you can easily get around the pitfalls of the a7rii.

I do pretty much the same. Also no video ever. Seems like a good fit. Last question, if I may. The autofocus is good and reliable? Or so you do mainly MF given all the landscaping photography and all?

Maybe there truly is nothing new under the sun. I spent my “bachelor party” in the BWCAW with my brother and the last evening of the trip under a poorly anchored tarp getting absolutely drenched. Good times indeed.

Totally fair, I definitely didn’t need to jump to the defense and start touting my bonafides. Thanks for clarifying!
