Finger lakes region is a treasure

Putting it on the bucket list! Last I was out on the water there, we took a ferry (I fail to remember where we boarded from, but I'm guessing there's only so many options, haha), to Madeline island, and that was extremely cool. Did a handful of tours, too.

There are actual full time light house keepers out on Superior.

I definitely thought this was going to be some obscure island off the southern tip of South America or something, was certainly not expecting mainland US!

The trip out wasn’t terrible, but staying for sunset came at a cost. It was a long (20+ miles) cold ride back to the mainland and we broke skim-ice coming down one of the channels. Totally worth it!

We found a single boat launch that was still mostly open, and got a small boat launched. It’s 20+ miles out to Devil’s from the mainland. We’ve had far more swings and misses than successes in December - this was a good day!

I guess near the devil is where I'll end up being then, cause damn, many of the beautiful places have devil in the name! I cant say Ive been to a beautiful place and thought, "this should reference a devil in its name."

Yes, those are the famous mainland ice caves. They haven’t been open since 2015 unfortunately. This is Devil’s Island which is 20+ miles out from the mainland. Good fun!

Just barely! Devil’s is latitude 47.080 vs Outer at 47.077. This image was in December a few years ago. We missed our chance this year I’m afraid!

When there is wind some of the caves can really sound unwholesome.

This one's lore happens to have native american roots.

Most of the time it’s not nearly so quiet out there.
