I think a better way to word this is to not depend on external validation.

It's important to care, and give a fuck about yourself and others.

I've found the "no fucks to give" attitude can also be an unhealthy coping mechanism when taken to the extreme, resulting in emotional withdrawal. Sometimes telling yourself you don't give a fuck while bottling things up inside is just compounding our problems.

I think about this when I'm exercising. When I feel exhausted, and don't want to pull that final rep or run that last mile, I think to myself that there's a future where you put in the work, and a future where you didn't. In which one would I prefer to exist?

9 out of 10 times, I go for it.

I guess so, but it's important to care about other people, and to care what other people think. You don't show up at a funeral or to church in sweat pants, for example (I personally think adults shouldn't wear them in public). You give people a break even when they're coughing or doing other annoying things, because they cannot help it. You care about your work and the feelings of others.

It's part of the social contract to give a f*ck.
