Not house related, but I recently started a new RN job at Hartford Hospital and it is FABULOUS. I highly recommend that your wife applies for positions there

Property taxes are high in CT in general but a lot of towns just had their assessments done. Property tax assessments are done every 5 years in CT, I believe.
That commute can be tough but if she’s working outside of normal working hours then it shouldn’t be as bad. Farmington is a decent choice because you’re close to the highway, but that part of RT 84 gets very backed up. Avon is 15-20 min from highway but those small side roads get pretty congested during the morning and after school / evening commute which can really increase your commute time. Rocky Hill or Wethersfield would be ideal for a commute to Glastonbury. Haddam might be a little far depending how on where you are in relation to highway.
Of the towns listed, I’d probably concentrate on Westhersfield and Rocky Hill. Glastonbury is another good choice. Cheshire is nice. Cromwell, Berlin, Wallingford, Newington, Southington, Plainville are ok, very suburban, but I think there are better options. Haddam is nice but more rural.
Despite everything I said about commute, I grew up in the Farmington River Valley (Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, Canton) and think it’s ideal fit raising a family. Good mix of community, excellent schools, stuff to do, with open space but not too far from civilization. If you look into that area, don’t sleep on Canton, the village of Collinsville is really cute.
I would also add West Hartford to your list.
Eta: as far as old homes, yes we have a lot of them here. I live in a century home myself, and honestly the construction is super solid and I haven’t had any major issues. Get a good housing inspector, look for someone with experience with old homes (shouldn’t be hard to find). If the home has been maintained and updated, it should be ok. Definitely make sure the septic tank is in good shape if you’re not hooked up to town sewer. I’d also be wary of additions that haven’t been done correctly, and foundation issues.
Edit #2: you might want to post this in the main Connecticut sub if you haven’t already.

How's the switch in New Haven? I see 3.5 hours for Amtrak all the way. That sounds manageable as long as the switch is predictable.

From Hartford just take Peter Pan. Doing the train loop through New Haven would take forever and be expensive.

I've done grayhound and Peter pan from Hartford. They usually stop in Worcester for a few minutes. Not a bad ride. Also check Megabus. You can sometimes get really good rates from them.
They drop off at south station or Logan. Then you can take the MTA to anywhere in the city
Hardcorex t1_iunkjc8 wrote
Maybe do bus there which is faster, and take the train back for a more leisurely comfortable return.
ParamedicCareful3840 t1_iunf2uq wrote
For a one time trip, the train is a bit nicer, but you are going south and then east to eventually go north. The bus will be much quicker. I was in Boston this summer for a golf tournament and had another golf tournament in West Hartford the following day and the only option was the bus, the train would take too long. It was fine, wasn’t too crowded, got to Hartford in about 1 hour 40 minutes

I’ve done the train many times. No complaints.

Trains ARE such a very integral Romantic part of CT AND a safe enjoyable MEANS of travel far superior, classier, refined MEANS of Travel a bus is no comparison . I grew up in WATERBURY and began taking the train into NY as a teen soon I got my license I began driving to Boston. I NEVER took train from CT to Boston BUT TOOK it ALL the way to Montreal.. I am a GIFTED Forensic Investigator Who as young as 18 followed MANY a Fairfield county Exec. On The train INTO Manhattan Good luck and hope you take AWAY some pleasure from your experience.

Taking the bus from Hartford to Boston is much cheaper and faster. That train ride technically works but would be hell to do in my opinion. The Peter Pan buses aren’t very expensive and it will be so much faster.
BrainOfTarth t1_iumkoxb wrote
I have taken the bus to Hartford, as well as the train to and from New Haven. Both are reliable. The bus from Hartford to South Station with be cheaper and faster.
The train route you proposed would work, but you are right in that it would be a long ride, and the changeover at New Haven could add some time.
