Damn man, if you can do this for historical data ranges as well, this could be a real game changer.

This is a pretty cool idea. I instinctively wished that as I zoomed into an area it repopulated with the biggest stories of that locale. I understand as a developer myself that this could be tricky, but overall I like the idea.

Also of interest may be the GDELT Project:
>GDELT monitors print, broadcast, and web news media in over 100 languages from across every country in the world to keep continually updated on breaking developments anywhere on the planet. Its historical archives stretch back to January 1, 1979 and update every 15 minutes.

I like the commitment with which you explained the problem. I would tell our designers to stay away from /u/redditor1101 😝

this is a very impressive tool
but also I hate websites like this tool produces.

I don't like modern web designers. They seem to be allergic to putting useful information on the screen. Stop putting giant fluff pictures in between everything, use normal sized text, and NEVER fuck with my scroll bar. heads up their asses, I swear to god.

Same, if I want to be zoomed in I can just zoom in. Perhaps make double click / tap zoom to the event, or just have a setting to disable it?

I love the concept, but I do not like the way that you hijacked the backspace key to jump back to previous incidents that I looked at (desktop user here). Maybe add a "Previous" button for that? Maybe also add a key to the meaning of the icons you use.

It says right on the sidebar: Conflicts (WIP). At least it does when I looked at it, I agree though, the very first thing I thought was, why is Ukraine blank?

I wasn't saying OP's site is not functioning well, that is an entirely different challenge so solve (and I doubt it is solvable by simple web scraping). His site is just about urgent news of the world.

The auto zoom on mobile is a bit annoying too, because you end up with so little of the map visible and have to zoom out again every time you look at an item.
This is a brilliant idea though, I love this.
