LPT Request- Keeping foreign language fresh as an adult

Request as part of a personal 2023 resolution: Last year I took about 8 months worth of weekly French group lessons. I took French for a couple of years in high school and lived there for a couple years as well as a teenager (American school though.) debating signing up for another class but looking for tips on keeping it fresh. I have Duolingo Pro and am going to try to study for 15 minutes 4 times a week (flash cards grammar workbook) thanks!

It sounds like you’re making great progress! I find that making learning the language fun and convenient has kept me at it for years. Here are some ideas:

  • Change your smart-phone’s language
  • For a video game or fandom you like, join a discord group or some kind of other online group in the target languages.
  • Explore pop music in the language you’re learning and sing along! The repetition of new words in songs will help you learn them!
  • find an show or YouTuber that discusses a topic that interests you in the language
  • Watch some “Easy French” YouTube videos that have fun and interesting street interviews
  • If you like reading and you’re very familiar with the language, you can find “parallel text” books with short stories in French on one page and English on the other.

Most of all, don’t be hard on yourself! Hope this helps!
