I am a born and raised Mainer who owns a fairly large retail business in Southern Maine. Obviously as we all know there has been a large influx of people moving here from out of state. (Who I love and I am so thankful they support my business. Who are also bringing money to the town to actually make it liveable.)
However, The amount of "Real Mainers" who expect preferential treatment over others just because you lived here your whole life is so annoying. I've heard several people in the store talking to my employees and say things about how we are inflating prices so the "locals" can't afford it or "I can't believe locals have to wait on these lines." I have even overheard people take pride in the fact they have never left the state. I'm supposed to give you preferential treatment because you just so happen to be born in a certain geographical location? I have many more examples.
Why are Mainers like this? We have one of the poorest and oldest states but we don't want people to move here? We want to be the Alabama of the north forever? Its crazy to me that people actually take pride in not being well traveled and ignorant. Maine is my home and I love it but sometimes I feel like the people can be so backwards.
