I'm surprised there are so many listings for PA in areas that are low in population but high in the number of state parks/gamelands. Why is there not a similar area for hunting/lake cabins in Maine?

That Maine green bud got you messed up if you think oil is cheaper than it’s been all winter. Remember just a few years ago when it was affordable until Joe came around and declared war on fossil fuels?

This is why I mock the hell out of YIMBYs. No im not calling for building to stop, but Portland has more units and yet a stagnate population. Cali also pushed upzoning and literally has less people now.

Building market rate housing alone changes very little for regular or poor income folks

I have a 1600 square foot cape that is older and drafty.
We have a pellet stove that has been worth its weight in gold. We typically burn a bag of pellets per day and keep the house around 75 to 80 degrees.
A bag if you buy in bulk runs $4-5 if you get them in the off season. So we basically spend about 120-150 per month in heating.

For the size of the home that’s about what we go through. We have a 100+ year old home, 1200 sq.ft and use about 100 gallons a month when it’s really cold. Steam radiators, boiler heats our water as well. We insulated the basement and attic when we bought the home.

Parts and Parcel is not a restaurant, but they have the best “Italian” I’ve eaten. They’re not cheap but nothing is these days.

We live in an old farmhouse and have done a lit of airsealing and insulating this year. We have relied on our heat pumps all winter, and it's been much more comfortable than when we relied on pellets and propane. Temps stay mid- to lower- 60s in the areas furthest from the air handlers, and we've got the thermostat at 67.
Yesterday was the first time we put on the pellet stove and that's cuz we were sitting around hungover and wanted the ambiance.

I imagine the Main roads to and around Bangor are fine but our back roads are pretty bad right now. Wouldn't worry about getting to Bangor but depending on where you're going up here you may have some issues.

Just a clarification of terms:
This list uses the federal “Combined Statistical Area” which encompasses 4 counties. It’s not just “Portland” - it’s the majority of the most populated areas of the state - 600,000 people live in this CSA.
> A larger combined statistical area (CSA), the Portland–Lewiston–South Portland combined statistical area, is defined as the combination of this metropolitan statistical area (MSA) with the adjacent Lewiston–Auburn MSA. The CSA comprises four counties in southern Maine.
https://www.citypopulation.de/en/usa/combmetro/438__portland_lewiston_sou/
The area includes:
Androscoggin county
Cumberland county
Sagadahoc county
York county
Lewiston - Auburn metropolitan statistical area
Portland - South Portland metropolitan statistical area

Not surprising. This is a CSA so it includes all of York County, Sebago Lake area, etc.

I have driven that road probably 100 times. There is no way I would be out there today. Cell service can be spotty. And the last I knew, there are no gas stations until Brewer which is about 90 miles away from Calais.

We went with heat pumps and a duct system for our primary heating source along with solar, but have a newer/well-insulated house, and a South-facing roof. The roof facing direction can make a huge difference in terms of your solar production, as does insulation. The tax credit was 26% on the solar plus an inverter upgrade when we did it, now it’s up to 30% so keep that in mind as well.
We went with Maine Solar Solutions, and they were great to work with, provided quick estimates. Happy to answer more questions if you have any.

Heat pumps are great until the temperature drops below 30-40, then they barely get the house to 60 on their own, in my experience at least.

My house is half your size but I have all 3. It came with a combination baseboard/DHW boiler system, I added a heat pump and all-nighter wood stove.
⚡Heat pump as primary.
🌲Wood stove when I'm home to feed it.
🔥Oil baseboard set to 50F if/when either fails and I'm not home to mitigate pipe bursting disaster.
