I gotta put in a plug for Pleasant Mountain (FKA Shawnee Peak). It's a little farther from you than Lost Valley, but there's a little more room to move around and there are a few great snowboard instructors who often do family lessons.

But the best answer is whichever place is most convenient and that you'll actually go to regularly. If you want to snowboard, you need to get out there and do it and develop the muscle memory and confidence to enjoy it.

Pleasant and Lost Valley are particularly good because they offer night skiing, which can be more convenient and less expensive. Monday nights at Pleasant are only $24 and there's a ton of terrain open under the lights.

I’m no HVAC guy but I do have a decent amount of chemistry - anything will freeze under the right conditions. We’re getting to some laboratory levels of cold and I prefer to be cautious over having an issue with the thing keeping the water in my pipes from freezing. I like OP’s thermometer suggestion.

I second that. I’m Brazilian and never had snow growing up, but I surfed and always wanted to try snowboard. I’m not good at all and feel comfortable enough even on blue trails at Lost Valley. I found my snowboard in a trash can, watched a bunch of youtube videos and pretty much learned by myself and I’m 36!

My kid (5) took lessons there for the first time this year and she is doing a good job.

I’ve gotten a real good burger at the A1 diner in Gardiner—one of the best I’ve had at a restaurant, in fact. It’s not too far out of the way if you’re driving in between Waterville and Freeport.

I’ve also had good burgers at Whipper’s in Augusta, right off of Cony Circle. Also just a minor detour if you’re en route from Waterville to Freeport.

Do you have insurance coverage? If yes ask them for a referral. Or tactfully mention up front your insurance coverage when trying to get an appointment. Counseling is an under-funded area to start with, and it seems like there is an exodus of healthcare pro's out of Maine for several years for multiple reasons.

If you have a thermometer put it in the basement and monitor that the temperature doesn’t fall below 45F. Most likely this will not happen as your boiler and the heat piping in the basement will maintain above 45. We generally are not concerned with inside oil tanks gelling because of this. If you had an outside oil tank I’d recommend having a 25-30% kerosene to 70-75% heating oil mixture in your tank to reduce the gelling at extreme low temperatures.
