Anyone have experience with/advice for chickens with these kinds of temps? They're in an insulated shed with no supplemental heat and have done well so far this winter. The shed was 25 degrees at the lowest. They're all laying hens, dual purpose cold hardy breeds. Water is already on one of those heaters designed to keep the water from freezing and I moved their food inside in anticipation of the cold.

Will they be okay if the temps inside the shed drop some more due to the cold and wind?

Somewhat of a separate issue, but it doesn't help that 95% of Biddeford Pool is owned by out-of-staters that don't live in them. Drive through there in the Summer and look at the license plates on the cars in the driveways, it's Massachusetts, Florida, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York in every driveway. A massive chunk of those houses sits idle all winter and don't even bother renting them out.

Seems like a lose-lose for Biddeford unless I am missing something, outside of the taxes they pay and maybe some expendable income spent downtime in the Summer months.

Those of use in older apartments have no way to adjust the heat. Thank god for space heaters and blankets and hot tea.

But if I could adjust my heat, I would not set it that high. We grew up closing off rooms, opening taps and wearing socks and sweaters.

Agreed, unless you MUST drive in any weather for work or some other reason, winter tires aren't really necessary. I've spent my whole life in the northeast and never really heard about people having them until I moved to Maine. I get that we're slightly further north here but I saw plenty of snow storms in other states. Seems to be a cultural thing, might just be a holdover from when Maine had more cold/snowy winters, but we're headed out of that climate.

yep.. this is the way. Relieves the pressure in the pipe if it does get a ice up (i was always told it was because flowing water wont freeze... the watched a segment on this okd house that proved me wrong. her, never to old to learn, i guess)

The latest heat pumps are rated down to -13F; they'll put out some heat but as you say they're not very efficient at that temperature. They're extracting heat from the air, and at colder temperatures there's less heat to extract.

Heck the people that lived in my farmhouse survived -30 and colder with no insulation at all. The north wall of the kitchen doesn't even have any wallboard!
