In addition to what the others have said, your thermostat is likely at the center of your house, while your water and heat pipes are on the outside walls. When it gets to "stupid cold" levels, it can drop below freezing at the walls before the air around your thermostat knows what happened.

My advice for anyone driving pleasant st coming in from 295:

-stay in the right lane coming off of 295 unless you have to go to one of the businesses on the left hand side of Pleasant street when you get off the interstate. If you have to go to one of those businesses (before the river road intersection) then you should start in the left lane.

-after river road, get into the left lane if you are going route 1 or stay in the right lane if you are gonna go to Maine street.

If you stay in the left hand lane from start to finish it will take you forever with people turning left all the time.

Yea imagine 1 center turning lane for people turning left BOTH WAYS...lol! That would be a nightmare! I just chill in the right lane when I go through there and seems to be fine!

As for the light by the police station it's not the cities fault people don't know how to drive/read signs!

For those in apartments or rentals without control over the heating, consider leaving the hot and cold water taps dripping. If your pipes freeze, unscrupulous landlords may blame you for burst pipes.

My landlord put my bathroom pipes just inside an exterior, uninsulated wall and was upset that they froze, burst and damaged the two floors below me. Fortunately, he ended up being pretty cool about it. He replaced those pipes with expandable pipes, but put them back on the exterior wall.......without insulation. They have frozen since, about three times, but fortunately, no permanent damage.

I lived near Mt Washington in NH and had all seasons on a rear wheel drive car and did fine. These days I’m in a Camry and as long as the plows are about regularly I can get around if I’m not being an idiot. I’ve found as long as I’m keeping a good amount of tread in my tires I don’t have many problems.

" Dedicated winter studded tires on steel wheels are a necessity up here. " No, they aren't !! I live in a rural area and used to commute 30 miles a day over very rural roads -haven't needed nor used snow tires since 1967 !

It's a meme invented by those who must have a decoration to certify their maineness and tire companies.

That said, if it makes you feel better there is no harm except to the wallet - No it isn't the same for studded tires - they should be illegal!

Bring on the wrath !

Boy I do like a block heater. I had one with a timer that would come on at 6am. I'd leave for work at 7:30am and if I'd remembered to leave the heat on "defrost" the night before the windshield would be mostly cleared by the time I got to the car. The heat would be working by the time I got to the end of the street...
