I've had vehicles with crappy snow & ice handling, and studded tires helped. Snow tires are better than all-season tires. Most of us live where there's decent snow removal and studded tires are overkill.

I'll turn the heat up to 60 F overnight to protect the pipes; wind pulls heat from buildings, too, and the only time I came close to frozen pipes was subzero temps + wind. My usual overnight setting is 50F.
In wind, a layer of petroleum jelly on your face can help; and wear one of your cloth face masks from Covid.
Frostbite is fast in low temps with wind.
Fleece tights under your pants; anything other than cotton is warmer than jeans, I can't find affordable wool pants these days.
Wear wool & fleece instead of cotton.
Pull the curtains; glass is a poor insulator and will let the cold in.
A hot water bottle or metal water bottle with hot tap water keeps you cozy.
Your pets' feet can get too cold; don't keep them out long.
I always have emergency supplies in my car, including socks, mittens, hat, blanket, water, jar of hard candy, granola bars, fleece. Severe weather is hard on cars.
I hate going out in subzero weather, so I won't.
Give handwarmers, mylar emergency blankets, chocolate, and dunkin or other gift cards to homeless folks; the shelters will be bursting, some of them won't go.

If you live alone be very cognizant of your keys and take them with you even if you are only going outside to shovel or take the trash or something. The last thing you want is to lock yourself out of your house in this weather. Maybe have a hidden spare somewhere that won't be buried by snow

They go out on the coldest days of the year because they're working the hardest

If your pipes freeze, you want the water to be dripping so pressure doesn't build up and cause the pipes to burst. Frozen pipes are a hassle, cracked pipes and a flood are a nightmare.

That's what this one is, and the one I got. If it says wireless thermometer, then it has a sensor outside.
And $11 for that technology is pretty cheap if you ask me.

I have a walk out basement. Furnace is in the back, the basement stays pretty level. Frostline is probably 12 - 18" below ground so basements are usually okay.

fake news. Yes people have a ton of ideas of zoning, no they dont have PACs, no they dont have political party's and no not all of them are defending home values. Also its backwards new pricey places drive people's home prices up

That study recommends adding turn lanes. It isn't the road diet OP desires.

Have been looking for wool sweaters; they've gotten hard to find. Cashmere is a heck of a find.

Exactly. I live in the mountains and they're not necessary here. Plus they trash the road when there's no ice/snow.
They might help if you don't know how to drive the conditions though it's a weird recommendation for a cold snap. The roads are cleared of snow and ice, why would you need studded tires now?

It's because the left turns make the second lane effectively useless, as through traffic gets stopped all the time for people making turns. There's tons of traffic research to back this up.

"Your eligibility is being verified" is the new "CMP is assessing the power outage on your street", I'm afraid.
Mine's still verifying too and I expect it to remain that way for months. Setting my bar reeeeeeal damn low.

Moose Pond at the base of Pleasant Mountain has had tons of pop-ups for the last couple weekends; looks like Long Lake in Naples, too. Depends on how south you want to be.

What's so wrong with passing along good advice to people? Not everyone has been here for 20+ years.

They do it all, design, building, reno and selling, everything across the real estate spectrum-no one knows the market better than Shannon Smith, their principal, or how to get the most value for your housing dollar.

And the NIMBYs fight tooth and nail to prevent zoning changes because it might hurt their property value(s growth) which would make their home be less of an investment and just a residence.

I fish up here in the Belfast area. I've been out Saturdays and Sundays for the past 3 or 4 weekends. There isn't a ton of ice, but it's definitely safe on the small ponds.
My suggestion would be go to IFW's website and look up the stocking reports for your county (if you're looking for trout). You'll notice the bodies that get fewer numbers of stocked fish are often tiny ponds that provide lots of opportunity to catch some fish and lock up far before the big lakes that are often more popular.

My plan is to cook my living space with the wood stove and set the thermostat in the basement to 55 so the furnace will kick on if it gets below that.

Gonna be real cold. Stock up on any emergency items you need now. Particularly anything heat related, wood, kerosene etc. Better to be prepared than stuck scrambling in -20 weather.

Reply to PSA: if this is your first winter in Maine, change out your windshield whisper fluid to something that won’t freeze. by CRAkraken
I buy the orange stuff, i think it's rainx? I don't have a summer and winter kind, I just buy that year round. Won't hurt anything in the summer and won't freeze in the winter. Tbh, I didn't think wiper fluid could freeze. Learn something new everyday
