Cold is a temporary state and easily remedied if you have access to indoors with heat. If you do, getting from Point A to Point B in extreme cold is a short, uncomfortable experience but it will end. It's also optional. You can always not go out.

Because housing has been commodified and is being redirected en masse to the short term rental market as profits are higher than with long term tenants. This state is filled with landlords who don't care about having functioning, working communities because the DINKWADs on vacation are willing to spend a mortgage payment on two nights in Portland.

These landlords are both local and from away. They're all opportunists, and one of the two is happy to let the other group suffer all the scorn.

Born and raised in Baltimore.

Huge fan.

Cried in '69 when the Mets beat them in the world series. Attended the opening day at Camden Yards. Was in Cooperstown to see Cal Jr. inducted. Haven't watched a game in years, but still a fan.

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up. I’m looking forward to the experience but also I’m not haha. Going to definitely layer up with my cool weather gear and pick up some cold weather stuff as well.

This is also our first winter with chickens! We’ve added loads of fresh straw, pushed snow against the coop & placed additional bales of straw surrounding it to help retain some heat. Just make sure there aren’t any major drafts and feed them cracked corn to help regulate their body heat. Consider a brooding plate if you’re really concerned. There is a Maine Backyard Chickens group on Facebook where a lot of people are discussing the care of their flock during this weekend’s extreme drop in temperature.

Making sure they have fresh water and a draft free coop is the biggest concern. If you don’t have a water warmer just be prepared to have fresh water on hand.

They will huddle together and warm up the coop just fine. For extra measure you can rub Vaseline to the combs to prevent frost bite. I’ve never seen the need for the heat lamps inside the coop. They can tolerate the cold extremely well, although some breeds not so much.

As long as the wind isn't blowing, -44F feels the same as -5F or 0F. It's just fucking cold. Your boogers freeze. It's hard to breathe. Your skin feels like it's being pinched (until it doesn't and then you're in trouble and need to get inside). If the wind is blowing, it's a completely different game.

I generally don't go outside unless I have to when it's below -5F which isn't that bad for a short cold spell like the one coming up. A longer cold spell has a whole checklist of things to do before it hits and behavior changes while it's here.

"Fashion" winter wear generally doesn't work in cold weather. You have to wear brands that build clothing for cold weather and then layer up.

My car has a built-in engine block heater that I just need to plug in for a few hours if I think I need to go somewhere. But why would I want to go out when it's that cold? It'll warm up eventually.
