I'm now considering buying the 008, and the limited functionality of the knob is definitely a downer. I'd love to use it just to switch between layers. I already have a volume scroll wheel that I quite like on my ControlPad.

Not quite, on their site the colors are a bit more saturated, the translucent is more a ruby/maroon and the legends are more of a cream from what I can tell.

I think for Black Friday Novelkeys came back with $89 sale for Serika and maybe some other sets I didn't check. That's over now but I think they are still running a $99 GMK sale and Cannonkeys also either was or still is doing something similar.

It's hard not to recommend them, at the price they are at. Especially if you want to do a matchy matchy with a lilac case, they look so good!

Yes but I’m sure you just refined your tastes from experimenting and finally keeping what you prefer. I have such vastly different switches I know the difference in all of them. I also have no taste.

The variant with black Latin characters is at least a bit better, but still not exactly pretty.

I enjoy anime as much as the next neckbeard here, but personally I only want symbols on my keyboard that I can actually use. If someone knows Japanese, then power to them, but it's definitely over-represented.

Greek characters would be super useful to me because I use them quite a lot in my work (physics), so making a layer dedicated to them (and a layer dedicated to the TeX codes for them) would be rather nice.

My office keyboard has the genuine Cherry MX Brown with SA keycaps although it's rather ordinary looking retro IBM beige. 😅

I’ve found a compromise with my wallet—spring swapping. I’ve found swapping to a 2-stage or long spring alters linear switches to a much more noticeable degree, and only at a fraction of the cost of trying different linear switches.

That said, I still own far too many linears, so it appears like my wallet isn’t really winning.
