I've always had a little fraught relationship with metal. I enjoy it's conventions and style, but I have never really loved it and I think it is because of lyrical substance.

My favorite bands right now are Nine Inch Nails and Florence and The Machine (hear me out) and I think they work because both have a strong and grandiose sense of style. But that is then paired with very honest and human lyricism. As if adulthood pain is interpreted through a child-like or teenage fantasy (More so with Flo than NIN of course)

With Metal, especially with more symphonic/grandiose style, the lyrics seem to emphasize the fantasy, the power and the badassery. Which to me tends to make the whole thing sound a bit too silly.

So, can you recommend metal bands with exceptional lyrics pertaining especially the human condition.
