You just make it honorary for a non-citizen. Like Angelina Jolie DCMG or Bill Gates KBE. They can't call themselves Dame or Sir, though.

In any event, the bigger problem with Prince is he's dead. Most honours - with the exception of gallantry ones like the George Cross - can't be awarded posthumously.

They also can't be revoked posthumously, being deemed to have died with the holder, which is why Jimmy Saville's knighthood couldn't be rescinded.

I saw her live in fairly small venues a few times before she really blew up and she was amazing. She was throwing candy out to the crowd and was cracking jokes. Her 3 backup guys were phenomenal and played off of her very well (they would end up being the saving grace of her later performances) I always loved her quirks, I mean she had a four foot beehive, she was odd, but historically, being odd makes for a great performer. Watching her decline was devastating. I’m a huge fan.

As you state in your last paragraph…”in your opinion..” Everyone is going to have a different set of parameters for what would qualify someone as “the greatest vocalist of all time.” I do remember the first time I heard “Careless Whisper” back in ‘84, and thinking “this guy can sing!” George Michael certainly was one of the best singers of his time. I’m in my 60’s, and have loved listening to music since I was a little kid. In my humble opinion, the top two vocalists of all time (based randomly on purity of tone, range and the ability to reach me emotionally) are Ella Fitzgerald and Annie Haslam of Renaissance.
