An album - Californication. Damn, I played it to pieces. But I first heard it at a joyous time in my life, and I’d want to hear it in that setting again, so maybe that’s just asking for heaven. Second choice, Astral Weeks.

A band - anything by The Beatles. We all seem to get drip-fed bits and pieces of Beatles music over the years, and we hear bands inspired by them, and I can’t work out how it felt to hear them for the first time when those sounds were entirely new. Especially as a young adult, not as a kid being told rationally about why they were important.

The first record I owned was Morrison Hotel, given to me in 1996 or 1997 by one of my high school teachers because I wore a Doors t-shirt to school at least once a week. I didn’t have a turntable back then so I displayed it on my bedroom wall. It was the CD era and I was very proud to have a vinyl record.

I still have that record. I don’t play it because it’s in rough shape, but it’s filed on the shelf with the rest of my collection.

I guess it’s not that new anymore 😬 but it’s still fresh imo. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. It sounds like exactly what you’re looking for.

For new(er) music, Solange has a doowop influence. The production is very chill and simple but the Melodies and harmonies are beautiful. Check out a seat at the table.
