I would have said no, as the same could be said for all portable music players at the time, not just the iPod. And because iTunes became a very restrictive platform which relied on users buying music in order to listen.
I'd say the popularity stemmed from the advertising above all else. The catchy 2d block coloured adverts with the white earphones became synonymous with mp3s and portable music. Even though the competition had superior devices and offered better audio quality.

Cathartic. A good way to drain the negativity that festers at a level that I can’t just “shake off”. It is a part of my cycle at this point….happy, easy going, productive, then professional frustrations mount, stress, anxiety, anger, then depression and finally an outpouring of emotion through music, not just sad music, but songs and artists that I find moving, meaningful in some way. The music is the trigger to release….sometimes it doesn’t happen when I want it to, but when it does, it’s a powerful experience.

Absolutely. It also turned me into a pirate snob. Anything less than 320 kbps is crap.

The other sad thing is music quality. Went from CD quality to a compressed lossy format to finally now just getting back to near lossless.

It makes me feel less alone when I relate to the lyrics and it can help me cry which can be very freeing. And sometimes it doesnt even make me sad and I just happily enjoy the good music

I've not really listened to her ( put off by the John Lewis ad I think) - any particular track spring to mind?

I did something similar. I would go to the thrift store and half price books and go through all of the CDs. $.99 for a CD vs like $10 for a digital copy. I'd go and spend $20 in one day and come home with a whole shit ton of music.

In short: humans are far more deep and complex in their sadness than in their joy. That is why sad, questioning, challenging art is often more revered

Sad and need to cry, can't get the lyrics out of my head, want to think about the person I associate with the song

I have listened to that album 4 times in ten years time.
But maybe it's a case of falling in love at first listen. I have had the same with Arctic Monkeys. Always a humongous fan of their early works, and never really listened to the more recent works until The Car. But man, what an album! And it's jazzy and soft as hell, unlike their early works, but I will forever defend The Car as long as I live.

iTunes would accept any mp3 you threw at it back in the day, so you didnt have to pay a cent for a device full of music.
If it would've launched with a pay service, Apple likely wouldn't be the powerhouse it is today.

I am a huge dance music fan. Been so since the early 2000s. In 2013 when RAM dropped it was not what I, nor anyone expected. That being said, it's anything but dull. It's like you listened to the first minute of these tracks and skipped it because it's not something that can be played at a rave. Giorgio By Moroder alone is 9 minutes of masterful building and progression, and even includes a prelude of spoken word by Giorgio describing how dance and electronic music progresses.
Will these tracks ever really get played in a sweaty warehouse like Rock'n Roll? No. But that is entirely the message with this album. You're entitled to not like it, but I'll die on the hill defending this album as anything but dull and "unspectacular".

Thanks very much. I've heard and liked The Beths before but they're not quite what I'm looking for, because they're more straight-ahead indiepop without much in the way of the club/dance/dub context which is what I'm looking for here.
Stretching an already stupid phrase, if One Dove are "Tea and E", The Beths are probably just"Tea"
