Advice from a Gen-Xer....When making a mixtape for someone, its about putting songs on that YOU like, but that act as a love note to the person. If you're trying to come up with songs that they like but you don't, it just will not translate well

For her 30th birthday, my wife asked for a mixtape from me. I put songs I thought she would like. It had Sam Smith, Nick Jonas, Norah Jones, Garth Brooks...I can't remember what else. She hated it. She asked me to remake her one with songs that I liked but that reminded me of her, or made me think of her. Mine had The Vandals, The Ataris, Cake, bands like that...She loved it and we still listen to it on road trips.

If you're still dead-set on going with songs you are unfamiliar with, I'd suggest "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits, and either "Just What I Needed" of "You Might Think" by The Cars. Also, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

Good luck dude

I think it's all about your preference in music. What gets you hype usually? It doesn't change because of the activity, at least in my view. I'm shredding down the mountain listening to The Avett Brothers' slow sappy songs, whatever you like. If you're looking for suggestions for just upbeat music, then I'll throw out K-Flay - 4 Letter Words Luke Fiasco - Daydreamin' Outcast Music, JAY1 - Loose
