I listen to enough that me and many others would enjoy from older generations to the younger generations. This is such a weird post.

All meshuggah is "angry" but I think chaosphere is the best if that's your actual mood

Spent a lot of my teen years in record stores. It’s crazy to think of how much time I spent just flipping and asking about artists. Parents used to think I’d say I was going to the record store instead of telling them truth like I was going someplace I shouldn’t. I admit I’ve gotten spoiled to digital music but definitely have fond memories.

That whole album is a masterpiece. I was obsessed with it in the 6th grade and I still am. Listen to it all the way through a few times a year.

I guess if I had the benefit of living through a time of greed, religious extremism, environmental decline and war the lyrics wouldn't seem so hilariously bad. Oh well, guess I'll never know what that's like...

Maybe you should try to approach music through books? Music is about emotions, and there are lots of concept albums having books behind them, especially fantasy ones. If you have some books you love, try to dig if there are any songs based on them. Sounds the easiest way to find smth that is really "yours".

Transverse City by Warren Zevon, namely Run Straight Down. Also great while cleaning one’s living space.

I don't have Spotify so it only played 30 seconds of the song.

Were you alive when "Imagine" was released? The song addresses issues and problems that were entrenched in western societies. I have no objection to your disliking the song or the band. I do object to your having declared the lyrics insult as in such an uninsightful way, when it appears as though you have described them as, essentially, stupid junk.

Oh yeah - hours spent just flicking through albums (and latterly CDs) just looking for something that took my fancy.
Or better still, going in for a specific purchase and then something catching my eye

i went to a record release party for this album. the label set up a movie theater with an amazing sound system. the first notes started and our jaws dropped. we looked at each other, stopped what we were doing, sucked on our drinks, and listened to the album over and over until they kicked us out. so good.

Oh yeah, for sure, as a step in their journey, I've got nothing against the song. If it led them to what followed, then I'm in debt to whoever saw merit in it. I'm just saying ... to me it's not surprising to see it on this list.
