I’m currently at 835. Like you, Nina Simone was even better than expected and I’ve found myself listening to even more of her stuff. The one big call out I’d like to make is Bill Evans whose album, Sunday at the Village Vanguard was #30. Was totally new to me and I’m now a big fan of his and have been working through his discography.

The great original bands have someone driving them. It’s probably the one writing, getting the gigs, showing the most skill, rousing the crowd, and expressing a vision for the band’s future.

Before you talk to your singer, you have to decide if you’re the driver. I can’t tell you how many musicians I’ve held back because I wasn’t the driver, or the talent, but nobody else took the wheel.

If you have the vision, and you can see that your frontman is great at something else, maybe lead guitar, and you should be the lead singer, map out a plan and say so. If it means he’s out, figure out how the band continues without him.

Do it soon. The number of musicians who never grabbed the wheel fills stadiums every summer weekend…as the audience.

Soon You’ll Get Better and Marjorie by Taylor Swift rock me to tears without even trying. SYGB is about her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and Marjorie was after her grandmother. They are absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking

AHH! THERE IT IS!! Somehow my neurotic adhd brain KNEW IT! Lolol! THANK YOU! So how this reads to me, what it equates to, is that, sure enough, if I want the algorithm to “know” that “X is one of my favorite albums ever; you should play it often, base suggestions off it, etc,” really I should continue to download—or “add to my library,” rate, and “love”—their new shiney, lossless versions, NOT because it’ll sound better, but because, as you say, it has the “right parts,” the right digital info attached! 😵‍💫🤯😯

DUDE! I could barely figure out what I was asking, and you nailed it!!! Thank you for real! 💜🙏✌️

>There is a bit too much 60's Brit rock for my taste, feels like it is 20% of the experience

Oh man, yes! I gave up initially because I got like 12 days in a row of Brit rock and just got tired. I'm starting up again and got Brit rock first day but it wasn't so bad. I think I'll skip some of those days this time around and search out something from around the world when they come up.

Ah thank you very much! So the site is just to help select the next album. I really appreciate it! The book looks super interesting and I'll probably pick it up

In the same boat, feels like I only listen to boomer rock or the same 5 artists I’ve had on rotation since I was 17. I’ve started listening to the artists that my favourite artists like and going from there :) otherwise, I just go to the “artists like this” and pick a random album while I go about my day and save the songs that stick out

I was just waxing nostalgiac about this the other day with my friend. I miss the impulse buys because of cool cover art, reading the album notes, talking with whoever was working the store that day, finding gems in the "used" section, and most of all, the sense of community. I miss you House of Records in Eugene Oregon. (fyi, they are still a running business if you want to go to an awesome little record store)

A long time ago, I learned that Apple Music uses exact “SKU’s” (I don’t know what they call them in Appleland), but think of it as a part number. Way back, during the iPod craze, after a while, I had multiple of the same song. I also lost a bunch of music (this was before cloud existed). In discussing a few issues with Apple, they said that the reason I had multiple of the same is because the part number is different. Even though it’s exactly the same song. And regarding lost music, the reason I could not get certain songs back is because the part number changed and they no longer carry the older part number.

I assume they still do this the same way. So, you can download the exact song/album, but to the app, it’s a different album/song. But, it’s really the same to you and me. From me simpleton way of thinking, this is a glitch, and one of the many problems with the digital world. I can think of a lot of reasons why it works this way. But, we can’t fix it since we’re consumers. Someone at App,e has to care enough about the problem to resolve it. And, they don’t care at all about it. So, there you go.

Spotify and Pandora have the exact same issue. So, it probably has to do with how the music is categorized from the publishers. For instance, a song on a compilation album will have a different part number than a song from the original album. A song from a remastered or re-release will be different than it original. So, you could have 3 or 4 copies of the same song on your playlist with the app thinking they are different from each other.

I can’t talk to the lossless feature. I’m not really that into a perfect sound. I don’t have any listening equipment that would make me notice. An iPhone with headphones is as close as I’m ever going to get, and for that, you don’t need lossless, no matter how good your headphones are.
