It’s a tough one! The best lead singers / front people are those who are constantly striving to get better.
I’d say your points could deffo be classed as constructive and if the singer can’t handle that sort of critique then the music business might not be for them.
We have a policy in our band that all criticism like this should be done openly (and frequently) with the whole group.
In the end of the day you’re only trying to make the group better!

What sells and what takes talent in music are often far apart so you make a good point comparing Dylan to Weird Al

I'm the opposite personally. When I hear a song, I only really hear the music and vocal melody. In certain styles of metal, you can't even decipher the lyrics lol
The lyrics themselves don't really stick in my mind. I can hear a song a hundred times and still not know the words

You must be the kind of person that goes around correcting people when they use "literally" figuratively.

Reply to iTunes, Lossless, and my digital library by PiickelJones
Weird and mysterious: algorithms and how/why they work for some some and not from others. In my case, in general it works so well that it tore me from Pandora after years of working on that one (I think initially having my entire library to “look at” and use, whereas pandora didn’t, must have made the difference at that time), and now I’m hell-bent on perfecting this one. I think the other commenters insight may have at least a bit to do with it (I mean, most of my original library was not gotten from Apple, but I’ve been streaming, rating, loving, and also getting their versions for a long time now, so it likely has an impact on the effectiveness…).

There's an art to it, though. You can't just say anything. There's phrasing and phonetics. So, while they don't "matter" in Beck's songs, they absolutely do.

Came here to say exactly this. You gotta take video of every gig (even rehearsals if you want). If the problems are as self evident as indicated, it'll be super noticeable.

Managed an independent record store from 18 to 22 - miss those days. Turning people on to new music, learning about new music from customers, chilling with bands before in stores. Good times. We have a few still in town and my son loves digging through through the crates with me.

I know it's not the same as talking to a person, but I use the free desktop version of Spotify and it has a lot more freedom to explore than the free phone app. If there is a band or person you like, click on their profile and it will show you more bands in the same vein. I use this in conjunction with a radio station like KEXP which is in my town but streams online too. So I hear something I like, I note what time it is, I look up online who it was because KEXP publishes their playlist by the minute, then I go to Spotify and look at that band and the bands that are associated with them and suddenly I have 10 new bands to explore.

I was just telling my daughter about how much time I would spend on listening bars at record stores. I found a lot of great music that way.

So is this gonna just be English / Popular Western English music or is there a variety?

I tried doing this at the height of the pandemic but had to abandon it as just never had the time to listen to a full album. I'm lucky now that I work from home and don't have distractions. Its my new morning ritual, Get coffee, login st work, start the album.
The good thing is that a lot of the albums are from a few decades back so relatively short albums 30-40 mins.

I just started something similar about 4 years ago for the same reason. Popular music has gotten too homogenous and it's hard to find new rock bands so I'm traveling back in time. I pulled up the wiki page of all albums released in my birth year ('76) and have listened to every album on that list regardless of genre. I'm currently in 1991, arguably the best year for music in all genres (so far.) I usually listen to 3 to 6 albums while I'm working. It's been an interesting experience and I've found some great albums that I've never heard of. I really got held up in my progress with Turtle Soup by the Mock Turtles. I listened to it on repeat for two days. I can't believe they never made it big. Perhaps it was too close to grunge hitting the airwaves.

Yea, and it will also give you some stats based on your ratings. Such as your favorite genre, favorite decade, etc.
It's also pretty funny to read other users reviews for the albums.

It's basically a remix, but A Fifth of Beethoven hit #1 in the US and top 40 in 14 countries in 1976.
