The best way to determine what a safe neighborhood is, is to use the search bar ------------>

I recommend getting an Airbnb near Penn station to start….then from there you can go out an check out neighborhoods and showings for rental apartments.

There was a pre-existing building there that was torn down to make way for the NNB (744 Broad). You can see the edges of it on the right side of this post-card, which depicts Broad Street looking north (Military Park in the distance). https://www.ebay.com/itm/223019543197
No idea what this building was.

The way buildings were built back in the day is way different now.

We found a whole stack of them. Apparently my predecessor stole them from the library. I'm pretty sure the photos have been in the basement at my job for at least 15 years.

I'm not 100% sure. We were trying to figure it out when we found the pic. I plan to walk over there tomorrow and look at it in the daylight.

I’m so confused. Are they taking the building on the right down? Why is there no wall on that side at all?

In terms of proximity to transportation, downtown Newark is second to none in New Jersey.
With JC and Harrison, you of course have to rely on the PATH train, which can be overcrowded. Also getting to midtown on the PATH is annoying. The 33rd street PATH station is unpleasant if there's any kind of wait as its just a platform. And on weekends, the PATH from 33rd through Hoboken is a fine example of the unique combination of f-ckery that is US public transportation. The last 1/5th of a mile of track into Hoboken, the train creeps along at 5 mph while screeching at 150 db. And the whole time, you're thinking, I don't even have to go to Hoboken, and how in the hell does the Port Authority manage to lose $200M per year on a system built 100+ years ago when they can't even maintain a normal schedule on weekends?
By contrast, in Newark of course, you have more options with NJ Transit, which, sure, is more expensive but is also a lot more comfortable.
Urby is a good option if you don't mind having a wall for a kitchen and a closet for a bedroom.
For a lower cost but still solid option, check out Teachers Village.

Roommates if JC but Newark and Harrison are good, look at apartments near the river and newark is cheaper than harrison i think. Newark also has the commuter rails along with path which is quicker than the path at most times.

Because 2100 vs 2400 is relatively competitive with each other? The buildings have different locations and amenities, prices will vary.

“Thing to move to JC… need apartment recommendations on a $2200 budget”
Lmao I’m sorry my guy JC isn’t gonna happen. There should be some units in the Ironbound which you can get for that but it’s a hike to the city

Eleven80 in downtown Newark has a couple of one bedroom apartments below $2,200 right now. That's about an 8 minute walk from Newark Penn Station.

It really depends on what type of room situation you want or need? Studio or 1 bedroom? There are studios all around for less than that and would keep you under $1800 even but if you talking about 1 bedroom there plenty at 1800 - 2200. Try Nest building in JC but those are studios. Also Newark has 1 bedrooms for the 2k range

In a year there will be almost a thousand new apartments basically across the street from Penn Station in Newark. If you can last till then I'd suggest it.
Rents will be competitive with the Hahnes building, 1180, and One Theater Square, which look to have studios at around 2,100/month.

I enjoyed living at the Harrison Urby. You’d definitely find something for less than $2200/month there. Lot of amenities in the complex and very close to PATH. Harrison is not the liveliest town but its safe and affordable. There’s also Vermella, 300 Station, 221 Bergen, etc within the area. Like others have said, I don’t think you’ll be able to get an apartment in a luxury building in JC for that much within walking distance to PATH.
Edit: Yikes, I see they raised sent on Urby Harrison since I lived there.. that wasn’t even a year ago. But the other properties I mentioned definitely fall in your price range. Best of luck!
