I mean people see the average rent of manhattan and get spooked. I said NYC and also I gassed it but my main argument was that Newark is too expensive for what it is worth. Newark is the one of the most expensive rent considering an average person's income.

In NYC, you have higher wages.

My argument was not cogent, my fault.

I saw a post that newark was the top 5 most expensive city in America considering the population's income.

For you, you move from more expensive to cheaper and I assume that (idk anything about you) you kept your NY income level or something comparable bc why would you move otherwise.

For you and I, newark is a good deal but for the population newark is becoming expensive.

This trend is not sustainable, something has to give. Either displacement of people, increased poverty or increased economic opportunities to name a few.

The developers have locked in on the train route towns to boost up the rent prices. When there was a recession in 2008 Newark it was cheap. It's more than just the price of materials. People in NYC are looking for cheap places. What happened in Brooklyn, is going to happen to Newark. We recently had a council person locked up for taking bribes from developers. Newark is worth billions. People in Brooklyn said the same thing.

Sometimes it’s all day. And yeah the person yelling and “singing” into the pa is tone deaf. No idea who actually attends, it might be one of those things where there’s free food if you’ll listen to some preaching and bad music.

Edit: there’s also the Haitian(?) church on Union St. Once a month or so a bunch of buses would show up and they’d have a big service. Otherwise it was closed most of the time. Way better musicians, and not early in the morning. The Galician church would ring some decent tunes on their bells sometimes. Everyone has a sound to make in that neighborhood, it was interesting.

The article says that Arc Tower is having trouble getting approved due to it being in a historical area // needing to demolish something historical.

All I know is that the perceived value of historical areas is exaggerated. I'd rather give the next generation a booming economy rather than performative nimbyism.

When I posted this earlier it got straight buried lol. Glad it's back on the forefront.

I will always prefer taller, but I do have to say I like this design. There's just a handful of blocks downtown that if they were redeveloped it'd be almost a night/day difference.

It sucks about the increase in rent scroll but glad you're staying put!

Typical NIMBY bullshit. I wish I was there to speak. I thought the next meeting was in November. I think we should start organizing a Newark YIMBY group to attend any and all such meetings and provide a counterweight to this nonsense.

Didn’t members of that James St group also oppose the new NJIT dorm, Maple Hall, because NJIT was replacing an empty burned out old school school? Those people act as though Newark was a site of ancient ruins to be preserved for archeologists.

Reminds me of the NIMBYs who opposed the 1 South Willow development in Montclair. They preferred a long vacated social security building, a parking lot and a tire shop to a six story mixed use development. That new development has totally transformed that corner, breathing new life into what had been one of Montclair’s uglier blocks.

The collective impact of NIMBYism is a major reason why housing is so expensive. We must find ways to limit their perverse impact every way we can.
