Yeah, the next question is did the city sign away public rights because the mayor got a $10 donation in 1986

You might want to ask the city clerk for any documents that may have amended or referenced this 50 year old document.

Right, theres a paragraph that says it can be closed for construction but thats done. It was fine when it was closed for awhile, but its been 2.5 years.
"I can understand not wanting to keep it 24 hours but like 6am to midnight at least."
As long as roads are 24/7, s should sidewalks be

Same, I didnt expect anything to be honest. Props to NJ Transit for responding so quickly (I asked them because the walkway made a hole into the station)

IANAL, but just because it needs to be open at all times doesn’t mean something can’t override it. The sidewalk in front of my house needs to be open…unless I need to repair it. Or I get a permit for construction work on my house.
Closing it at 8pm in the future seems dumb. I can understand not wanting to keep it 24 hours but like 6am to midnight at least.

Great work, and I think this initiative will garner a lot of public support.

Actually, if I were you, I would send this whole thread and it’s concerns to:
>TAPintoNewark: newark@tapinto.net
>Nj.com: tips@njadvancemedia.com
>JerseyDigs.com: hello@jerseydigs.com
This way, the press can be informed and maybe do some digging at their own discretion, and maybe investigate as to why this condition is being challenged by Onyx Equities Development.
Great update though, thanks for sharing 👏🏽

I would reach out to the owner directly first and if they push back then give them one last chance by citing what you know from the OPRA request.
If that still doesn't work then forward all that communication to local government and let them do what they're elected to, at that point you can sit back and enjoy the show.

I don't mean this to be a jerk, but please use the search and you'll find this question asked and answered several times in the past few months, with tons of helpful answers/suggestions.
Good luck with the move!

I live downtown/university heights. I also work in Newark, but it’s a short walk/electric scooter ride/subway ride from Newark Penn and then 22 minutes to World Trade Center.
My rent is probably less than half what it would be for a 1bed in Tribeca. Not to mention I have my own washer/dryer, nice appliances/finishing and a gym in the basement. Wouldn’t call it luxury but definitely miles better than the walk ups in NYC.
Agree with others about Newark not being dangerous if you’re not looking for trouble. Miles safer than NYC imo. There just isn’t that much to do here after 9pm though. I end up going into the city 2-4x a week to meet friends and grab a drink.

Please write officially to the developer and cc the mayors office requesting clarification. My guess is no one read the fine print and everyone is just going on gut. Don’t let them know you have the paperwork in the beginning, just say you were “ made to understand by someone who was involved in the original project “ or something like that. Technically you are not lying 😊.
It’s always good to understand where the opposing party’s default position first before showing your cards.
PS> please update this thread. This is a matter of great public importance

I love that you did the OPRA request! I miss walking through Gateway, it was really helpful at night, during bad weather and generally to have cameras on and around you just in case! I hate that it’s closed now I used to use it everyday and hope that this gets fixed

Why not NYC? i feel like people say NYC is expensive but do not calculate the savings you get from no car and that you can live outside of Manhattan. Newark is cheaper than NYC but that comes at a cost, you probably would want a car so car cost, there are less things to do in newark and most of newark is quiet after like 7pm. Idk if you are single or not but more social/romantic activities if you are into than in NYC.
Also it is much easier to find roommates in nyc if you are down for that.
NJ taxes are pretty comparable to nyc taxes so you do not save there and much more job opportunities in NYC.
Really research and see if you can live in nyc. Look at brooklyn, downtown manhattan, and queens basically anywhere with good subway access. Since you are not looking to move in the high demand months (summer) it should be cheaper.
TL;DR: look at nyc, the cost might not be as bad as it seems
Good luck, make that move!

I’m born and raised in Newark, and I can tell you this much….. if you stay out these streets the streets won’t bother you…. I work down the neck of Newark behind penn station so if you want any direction as for more quiet areas with not much going on but still close to downtown Newark and stores and good eats plus all the events concerts and games and etc… then I would say the ironbound section of Newark for the most part is quiet as kept, society hill townhouses is more so a gated community so that’s a good spot…. North Newark Lake street side pass Bloomfield avenue… But also there’s a lot of areas you can adjust too and not worry at all.. As for places to avoid , i will say some just are drug environments where a lot of crackheads will steal or beg just to get high like Seth Boyden area , also Hyatt Courts, and Pennington courts … and 18th avenue towards grove street, all drug activity.. but like I said .. any negativity is followed by negative activities … and if you not in that lifestyle you are fine .. I don’t be on here much it’s about 1am and just seeing this lol but any more questions send me the message on my Instagram —> ayo__p_

Realistically, if you are enrolling now the district is going to put you where they want/has space this year. The magnet schools (Science, Technology, etc) you would need to apply for and I don’t think it’s open right now. I would anticipate going to whatever traditional high school is closest to your home.

A bit unethical/not the best advice but if you do not need a good environment to perform (hard bc people need a good environment to do well) aka you can do well in any environment, you can join any school. Colleges care about your school so if they see you doing well in a "bad" school then they think you are resilient. but this is unethical bc "bad" schools are lacking resources. So go to the best school you can but if you cannot make it, it is not the end of the world.

As a fellow Texan who has spent a few years in Newark, I’d highly recommend that you don’t move here. If you want access to NYC without Manhattan prices, try looking in cheaper boroughs (e.g. Brooklyn, Queens), or else try Hoboken/downtown Jersey City.
