The sooner we all get past the initial sting of "Luxury condo coming soon!" and realize that this is exactly what's going to happen I think we'll all come to an agreement that this is eventually going to be a good thing.

You might be able to borrow some, but I cannot promise. If you want to wait for an “off skates” info session we should have one coming in February.

If you’d like to just come by and ask a couple questions you can, if you have your own skates feel free to join!

Great! And what form do aerosols take in the human respiratory system?

Oh, that's right, water droplets from expectorants! Of which, mask, even cloth ones, are effective at slowing or preventing their wide ranging spread. God damn, did you wake up today and decide to be stupid, or is this your default?

Honestly, it doesn't sound like you're in a position to move. Your budget is low for the current market, it sounds like your credit score isn't great, and you're going to fuck up your future by breaking the lease.

I understand that the situation sucks, but you're not doing yourself any favors by getting aggressive with the neighbor. And living in the hood, it's not a good idea to get the police involved.

Get some ear plugs, stop communicating with the neighbor, and deal with it until your lease ends.

Agreed. Ever since then I've been totally weary of the city. I moved out the following week, broke my lease and all I dc. And I'm just more fearful in general but I've talked to prolly 10 ppl who have experienced similar personally nevermind the news stories and it's 100% no disrespect/shit on anyone who lives there, I lived there myself and at one point thought it was a cool place.

It's more or less just upset that somewhere I wanted to be once upon a time ago is over run by crime and losers. Even when I drive thru now it's just like wtf. Maybe 6 weeks ago I went out to a bar with a friend. On our way home I saw a group of people fist fighting and kicking a guy on the ground stomping on him. It's like...not a good (even ok) place anymore. I won't even go back for a bar/club now. I just wish it wasn't so crime ridden and I don't fully get why or when it got so bad. 10 years ago even I loved being there, it wasn't perfect but like...it's way worse now. EP I'd still visit and my cousin lives on the east side in a good neighborhood but most of prov is scary these days sadly.

And yes waterplace park is out of sight in hindsight (20/20). The guy who ran and helped me was in a friggin full suit and tie. I don't even kno his name but he's my God damn hero. He chased off 3 guys and a girl wailing on me. People like that restore my faith in humanity cuz he could've turned and ignored it but chose to help and risk his own safety. I hope that dude has wonderful karma.

Totally. I'd get not wanting to just jump at the first offer but the idea that this is some supremely desired parcel of land we're underselling? It just doesn't line up with what's happened.

I would hope that whatever purchase price for the land has at least adjusted to account for the real estate bubble market correction we've had since 2016 but I'm not going to pretend I know enough to say what is or isn't a good deal on that beyond two things

  1. Right now, it's wasted space. Parks are cool. This is still wasted space. It was never meant to be permanent green space.

  2. It sorta seems like there's only one interested buyer that isn't Brown University. I don't even know if they have interest, I'm just assuming they would and they're the one entity you can not do.

As much as people like me might parrot talking points of organizations like PPS it is amazing to me that people are putting forward the idea that this makes any difference to the housing supply issues which affect low income people far more than luxury buyers. This is a building trades talking point, not reality. If you want to dent the housing crisis then you can do it with appropriate scale housing as easily as you can with expensive towers. Our real estate is not at a premium multiple that towers are needed.

I like towers and skyline too. I was a heavy proponent of the Westin condos and waterplace etc. But stop trying to justify this junky piece of crap with "we need housing". It's a straw man for this project and worse plays the idiotic game of taking a genuinely important issue and trivializing it to justify a bad project.

At least have the honesty to say "I work in the trades and just want the job" or "I like seeing steel rising no matter what it is" or "I actually never go to and/or hate Providence but think I know better than Providence residents what is good for them."

There’s already plenty of rich people moving from Boston to Providence regardless. It’s better for them to be competing for new luxury apartments that most people can’t afford, than competing for the limited existing housing against the Rhode Islanders who are already struggling and getting outbid.

From the story Globe Rhode Island reporter Amanda Milkovitz:

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — A Davisville Middle School teacher accused of stalking a pre-teen girl he was coaching and harassing other students in his classes is resigning at the end of the school year, according to the lawyer representing the girl’s family.Lawyer Timothy J. Conlon said Friday that he and the family learned about the resignation through other sources the previous day — and not from the School Committee or the administration. The teacher has been on leave since spring 2022 as an investigation into his behavior continues.

...

Starting in 2017, the middle-school girl’s family had tried to get school officials to do something about the teacher, who they said had fixated on their daughter and began stalking her. Frustrated by a lack of response, the family filed a formal complaint in 2018 with then-Superintendent Phil Auger, Conlon said.

It wasn’t until the family threatened to get a restraining order that the teacher was made to stop coaching middle-schoolers in North Kingstown. However, the teacher then went to coach in two other school districts and remained as a teacher at Davisville Middle School.

Then in April 2022, Conlon, who is representing current and former students in a case against former high school basketball coach Aaron Thomas brought the family’s allegations to then-interim Superintendent Michael Waterman and the US Attorney’s Office, which is investigating a complaint under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act. Waterman placed the teacher on leave and launched an internal investigation.

Conlon said the school administration said it lost the family’s original complaint. In the meantime, other former students came forward about the Davisville teacher’s behavior. A group of boys had kept a Discord log to track the teacher’s “creepy” behavior toward the girls. A young woman who read about the boys’ “Pedo Database” came forward about her own experiences in the teacher’s classroom, calling him “the worst teacher I ever had.”

That's a big part of my feelings on this - while I'd prefer the city find other investors and ways of making some big moves, it's been some 30 years since the last BIG move and the city is crawling forward. I love this city enough to want to see it have some progress without kicking this away and waiting (who knows how many more) years for another OFFER to come (years more away from that coming to fruition). They need to do something, and waiting several more years or decades for the perfect thing to fall in our lap just isn't practical.

Looked up the woman on FB as the story says she was posting about it there first, and it gets a bit more ridiculous as she lists her occupation as 'Sr. Director of Business Development, Life Sciences at TransPerfect' TransPerfect being a TRANSLATION services company! So she should fully understand what likely happened here.
