Eat all the good food! My favorite place to tell people about is Palos. After you eat , walk down the water to burn off all the calories:)

Lots of great restaurants! You can see if there is a show playing at the Providence Performing Arts center. I also love the Providence comedy connection. Freeplay acrade is a fun 21+ arcade that's open at night-time with mostly retro games, all set to freeplay. Roger Williams Park is nice to walk around, any there is a zoo. There are some nice bike paths you can walk or ride a bike on (east bay bike path). Amazing coffee roasters (New Harvest, borealis, Bolt, We Roast). Go to the RISD art museum.

These are my personal favorite activities to do in providence and the surrounding area.

I’ve been to providence many times but that was only the airport to go to cape cod. I’ve been to Boston and went to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox. I was mostly interested in Providence because I wanted to move there eventually and practice as a nurse.

You don’t know how much I cringe when I see a post on here saying “Moving to Rhode Island from (insert state here).” That’s only one of the problems affecting housing, but it definitely doesn’t help

Not to hijack the thread but it seems like getting a HELOC and working with a local electrician is the way to go. Better interest rate and no middle man.Has anyone done this?

>Solar payback takes too long as it is

Says who? It depends on what you pay for the installation — including any tax breaks or subsidies — and what your energy rates are, and are projected to be in the future.

We don’t know the first number, but we know that both gas and electric prices are high right now, not likely to go down any time soon (if ever), and everything OP doesn’t have to pay RIE for monthly power is money off the cost of his solar installation.

Maybe he can tell us what his payback period is, and which way his roof is oriented. My guess is it’s about 7–8 years. And don’t forget that he can recoup most if not all the money he spent on the installation when he sells his house as solar-powered …

>now 1/3 of the year has little return

Again, what’s “little return”? It may not be the same as during the summer, but it’s still significant, and could be an even larger percentage of his total need if he can lower their household consumption a bit.

>Who can know they will be in the same home for 10+ years?

A lot of people, but even those who don’t know can usually derive a fair return from solar over the short (2–3 years) or medium (3–5 years) term, on aggregate …

Gets a decent small home on the eastern shore, but yeah not a huge family home. It would still cost 40% more in Mass.

When I bought here, it was because a nice place I was looking at in Rockland, MA had tons of asbestos shingles. Remediation cost was over $100K.

In Bristol County RI, I found a larger place with a bigger yard, a 2 car garage and no asbestos for $150K less. It was a no brainer.

Unfortunately 400k doesn’t get you much of anything anymore. Got to spend closer to 500k or be willing to put in some major sweat equity. However in comparison to Massachusetts it’s definitely an upgrade coming here.

Source from Jan of this year — Rhode Island the third most popular moving destination.

https://www.abc6.com/rhode-island-ranked-3-on-list-of-top-moving-destinations/

People who can’t afford a $750K bungalow in some forgettable Mass exurb are buying nicer $400K places here. And Providence is a downright urban living bargain compared to Boston.

If you have a Massachusetts salary, you’ll never afford a home of your own up there. So they all come here.

I was an early adopter.
