That's where I'm at too. Bought in 2018 for what is now a super low price, then refinanced in 2021 for what's now a super low rate. It's so unfair how someone just like me is totally screwed out of being able to buy a house, just because they're doing it a few years later.

Yes probably shut off eventually, but consumers have some additional protections in place currently.

New temporary rule, applies to everyone: no attempts to collect outstanding energy debt will happen until after March 2023.

Annual winter moratorium, applies to everyone: no utilities will be shut off for nonpayment between Nov 1 and April 15.

Year-round, for certain groups: no utilities will be shut off for nonpayment if you are a household with an infant, a seriously ill or disabled person, or elderly person.

Temporary rule, for certain groups: forgiveness program for energy debt accrued before March 2022.

Here's more info on all that and more: https://mlpb.health/digital-digest/ri/utilities-internet/

Okay I was 19 and wasn’t taught during the drivers test. How is that my fault? I know how to drive and park now. I said I taught myself to parallel park. This was the only time I hit someone and I was a new driver.

This has always been a big part of the test in all kinds of states. I think it speaks to a) city driving and b) control of your car and spatial awareness. The driver is in control of a hunk of steel that can kill. They need to show they can manuver it.

This has the same vibe as the “let’s all storm Area 51! They can’t stop all of us” / “don’t buy gas on these days” / “general strike” ideas that come up every so often online.

The problem is the prisoner’s dilemma calculus where too many people aren’t going to bother so it’ll never have enough momentum. The hassle of a shutoff or even a late fee is going to deter way too many people to make it effective. And since it’s a trial in the court of public opinion, it’s worth mentioning that the majority who don’t participate are not exactly going to be sympathetic.

We just had our daughter go through this last week! I suggest going to the Cranston DMV and watch the cars taking the test. They do it right in plain view in the parking lot. Had I known I would have taken my daughter to watch so she'd know what she was in for. They also have a video on youtube you can watch. It is so weird to me that they don't test on any kind of road. It's all about parking, stopping, a little back up and a turn. But she passed!

Unpopular take: Houses have always been expensive. In the 60s you could buy a nice house for 40k. In the 70s that bumped up to 60k. By the 80s you could buy a nice house under 100k in most RI communities. But you had to cough up 20k for a down-payment and pledge your firstborn for a mortgage. That kept homeownership out of reach for many. Then the median home price hit 150, 200,300,400... and most of us cannot afford one just like many of our parents couldn't afford one 35 years ago. In ten years, the median price will creep near a mil and people will say, "remember ten years ago when you could buy a deecent house for 400k? That was a bargain!"

The solution is not some magical dust that creates inexpensive housing out of thin air. It's a solid housing policy (offering both homeownership and rental options) combined with raising incomes in a state where people make trash wages for a variety of reasons.

I know they can. But would they turn off power for tens of thousands of people? a) millions in lost revenue and b) how horrible would it look if they cut the power to thousands of homes?

It's one thing to do it to a hundred dead beats that won't pay. It's another to paralyze a whole state.

The idea is that we are the consumers and we should have the power (pun!).
