For a minute I hoped this meant they would replace the "traditional" road test with one that actually, you know, tested worth shit.

There’s a road test here? I thought they just checked if you know how to turn the car on.

Piece of advice. Buy everything you need yourself so you can get a breakdown of the labor. Or at least price it out. The materials for a job like this are probably $4/5k if your not going super fancy.
I’d also price out everything with individual contractors. It’s a pain in the ass, but you may be able to do it cheaper. I did a 50 square foot half bath for $8k 3 years ago like this. $2k materials I bought myself. $1k electrician for lighting, $1k for plumber to hook in toilet and vanity, $4k for walls, painting and floor install
Is there anything you or a friend can do?

As I sit here looking down the street at the endless empty houses just sitting here for rich out of staters to enjoy 2 months out of the year. Second house: double tax, third house: triple tax……

DMV has impressively latched onto COVID protocols and is taking them to an extreme other state agencies can only dream of. Still reservations only and now no road tests.
I notice they haven't abandoned the VIN Check shakedown, though. Maybe they can have us do it ourselves--use some non-encrypted website hosted by a politically connected vendor to search for our VIN, and when it doesn't come up (it won't, there are no cars in the database) we just pay a flat fee split among the police departments.
Hey DMV. I'm consulting over here.

$30k a few months ago for something basic in a small bathroom with all new plumbing, drywall, and new wiring/lights. No frills. Nothing custom. No designer or architect used. Everything costs twice as much as it used to. Probably could have done it 5 years ago for $15k. Much of the cost was correcting work by a prior contractor who did shoddy work not up to code. So we had to spend extra on plumbing and electrical. $$$.

the price also varies based on where you live. it shouldn't make any difference where you live but it does. the price will be much higher in barrington than in west warwick.

Stihl MS 250. Great saw. Will last a lifetime, plenty of power for the average user but not too much. Great all around saw that’s easy to handle. Also would allow you to cut firewood if you ever need to.
Edit: battery options mentioned aren’t bad. I would stick with dewalt or makita if you go that route.

Not in RI, just want to wish you best of luck. I just had two very small bathrooms in my small house, quoted by a place that has excellent reviews. Their quote was $110k-$150k. Walked out of that meeting wondering wtf. One bathroom is barely 5ft wide. The other isn’t much bigger. Unless they were using solid gold and rare marble, I have no idea where those costs come from. Wasn’t moving any plumbing or electrical. Edited to add I’m in southern NH.

Are those limits really enforced now? I'd be interested to see how much of a difference that would really make.

Sounds like a quality cordless model would work for you. Buy Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch or similar for longevity and product support if needed.

If you don’t need all the plumbing to the water line and septic redone behind the walls and into the basement, and can just attach the vanity and shower/bath to the existing plumbing it will be much, much cheaper. And if you can buy a prefab glass shower door it would be cheaper. A custom glass shower door is almost $2,000.
