Yea, the most ironic thing about that song was its name.

Agreed whole heartedly but black markets aren't always for illegal products. Can find black markets for things like laundry detergent.

This is the correct answer. In addition to what the above posters pointed out, melange has a psychedelic effect as well.
Frank Herbert stated that psilocybin had a major effect on his conception of spice

I’m 70% deaf. Nobody ever does this for me, rudely or otherwise. It’s all on me, every sentence.

I’ve spent my working life in a loud environment, and my hearing is not what it could be. I’m constantly saying “what?” to people that speak softly

The only real way ive found to make 99% sure something isnt taken the wrong way is to turn the potential insult around on yourself. I have also found that statements proposed as questions work better than outright asking something, as it sounds less accusatory for whatever reason, less direct I suppose.
So both rules together is something like "I'm so sorry, I feel like I sometimes talk too quietly, hopefully eveything made sense?"
For sure it's not perfect, just like other phrasings the person could take you up on your deflective answer and have you repeat it (good ending) or pretend that they in fact were listening and lie out of pride (bad ending)
But you're almost guaranteed to not insult them!

Yeah, but the spice is also extremely magical and almost acts as a sort of life source.
There is no real world contemporary analogy for the Spice Melange because it's like 10 things combined.
