Not sure what store you are talking about, but where I work we are told to ask every single customer including those that are basically early 20s. Pretty much if they have a cart, ask. It's not a sign that they think you need help out. It's a service. That's how my store treats it anyways.

In many jobs young people are working harder, with no guarantee of job security, raises, or promotion. Not even mentioning the lack of a pension plan. You're no longer off the clock at 5pm, you have to frequently do overtime, and many people are having to juggle childcare or other responsibilities as well.

However much we all come to hate capitalism there is no denying it's the best we've come up with so far despite it's glaring faults. Every day less and less people are at or below the poverty line. Productivity is through the roof compared to even decades ago let alone centuries. Survival used to be a non stop affair, now for more and more it's "only" 8 hours of wage slaving a day.

That totally makes sense but as a person who came from retail and went into nursing, things escalate higher which make them more outrageous. Maybe because it’s more intimate? I’ve always thought of healthcare workers as a “hierarchy” level being pretty up there. That’s why I believe kindness gets taken advantage of easily.
