Shelton has a tradition, running seven decades, of being Christmastown USA the entire month of December. The town feels like a magical wonderland at that time
I live in northern mason county along the hood canal and plan to raise my 1 year old daughter out here because my childhood in a larger city was rough at best

Have you considered Port Angeles? I lived there for two years and loved it. Or Port Townsend? Grew up there and although it’s changed a little, it hasn’t changed a lot and that part of small town USA is a bit comforting these days.

Also good to hear. It seems that quite a few people are saying the hate is just because the rich hate the poor. I’ve spent most of my life living paycheck to paycheck so it’s no bother for me

After reading the other comments I’d like to add on that yes, it is conservative, but in the same way most more rural places in Washington are. And you notice the conservatives more than the sizable liberal population (Shelton too has lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc.)
It does have a sizable Guatemalan population that brings a lot of life to the town! And great food! It’s really not a “cesspool” or anything. It’s economically depressed. A lot of people in the PNW harbor a semi-secret hatred for poor people, and poor migrants. Often under the guise of disliking conservatives. I think a lot of Mason county’s harshest critics are guilty of that.
For the record, I also think the real estate is valuable enough there that the town will likely become less impoverished in the next couple decades. It’s already less rough around the edges than when I was a kid, from what I know.

I’ve been there a few time and even the rural American against racism signs are few and far between.. granted I don’t think every single house needs a sign like that but at least a business should have something like “(insert city) welcomes everyone “ I’ve seen that in Lewis county at a few places

My parents still mask but daddy has Parkinson’s so he is extra careful but usually just sticks to short outing and the occasional out to dinner date with my mom

Oh yeah. We had pocket issues over that here in Vancouver, up there it was a mark of pride to be "unafraid" of any virus, while simultaneously being terrified of a shot

I hope you didn't have to just drive by and view from the freeway.

Parents live in kalama and only like it because they live away from people but in a woodland hippie way and not a maga way

Anywhere rural in Washington State or Oregon is not worth it unless you are a cos-gender heterosexual white male. Stick to the cities or go and find out for yourself.

I grew up in the area. Don’t ask people from Olympia. Tbh I think a lot of it comes from classism, it was considered a poor area most of my life, but they are extra critical. If you have kids, I’d reconsider because unless they’ve changed anything, the schools there kind of suck. But besides that, it’s really not that unsafe or anything. Lock your car, don’t be an idiot, don’t do meth, and you have nothing to worry about. And for what it’s worth, I think it’s a truly gorgeous area of the state.
People who think it’s all that dangerous have never lived anywhere worth worrying about, I think.

Get a divided feeling being there especially during the Covid situation and masking (lots refused it) made my parents uncomfy

Not a progressive town. Hard working, conservative folks. But don’t expect BLM signs and pride week. It would take a spectacular job offer for me to consider it.

My mom lives out in kalama (acreage) and is in a mixed racial marriage with my dad… they avoid Longview if they can. I’d go with the consensus of Olympia it’s so awesome and they have a year round farmers market and lots of small businesses. I’m not much of a city person but their market and access to hiking is amazing. Or even outside Olympia if you’re not a city person . But the area allows you to also visit the cascades, rainier, st Helen’s, Olympic, and other parks in day trips

Comparatively, far fewer Washingtonians can trace their ancestry locally than NE. I don't feel people are as rooted here and there's a feeling of impermanence.

Looking at the map, the Teeley Creek trailhead is about 10 miles off from the highway. Even if you're going very slow, it should be less than an hour, so if you plug how long it will take to get to the turnoff from the highway (by Copper Creek Inn), I would add add max 1 hour to find the total.
