I'd highly suggest to talk to a lawyer to get this false claim removed. If this does go on their record yes it can have serious consequences. This will severly restrict their employment opporunities.

I had a friend do a big crime shortly after high school. They were for ever stuck with fast food jobs after that. If it weren't for online application development he probably never would of been able to get out of that. You can freelance.

I know people are mad but this is literally part of DNRs job scope, auction off mature timber. The problem comes in when the replanting of those trees does not happen or they are not cared for well enough for them to survive. Thats what needs to be addressed. The unfortunate reality is we need timber to build and we have a homelessness problem thats created a need for affordable housing, we cant do it without the wood.

An inexpensive space heater would solve your problem. Under $40 at a hardware store, Target, Fred Meyer, Amazon, etc.

But it sounds like you’re looking for a lever to break your lease. Maybe find a local tenant rights group to help. And it might be smoother if you had someone lined up to take over your lease.

We bought a house with forested acreage that had been clearcut twenty years ago and it makes me sad. Many trees that have grown in those twenty years aren’t healthy and are slow to grow. Some are still so young their tops snap off in any windstorm. And I think of those photos at MOHAI of the giants that have been felled. It is tragic.

You’ve jogged my memory and made me realize it’s even more important for OP to talk to HR than I stated previously.

I’m not sure a business license was the problem – I’m thinking it was the payroll taxes my husband’s employer was going to have to pay to Washington that they didn’t in Utah. We obviously know that employee taxes change from state to state, but don't often remember employer taxes also change from state to state.

How do taxes work for remote workers?

My husband’s employer may have accepted a pay decrease to cover their increased employer taxes. That likely would have been awash in terms of paying taxes in Utah vs. having a pay decrease but no taxes in Washington. That wouldn’t have worked for us because we were already stretching ourselves so thin, financially, to get into a pricier real estate market. We needed that gross salary as high as possible to qualify. But maybe a pay decrease is something OP is okay with. Maybe their employer is willing to pay the increased cost and keep their salary the same. That’s something OP and their HR would work out, not us.

We moved from the exact state u/1150A is living in, to the exact state they’re considering. I think my experience is very relevant here.

Since there were already a couple of other employees telecommuting, my husband’s boss didn’t realize there would be any problems with us moving and my husband telecommuting as well. He wasn’t versed in the taxes and laws, but HR was. Those problems didn’t come out until our home was sold and we were literally on our way with our children and all possessions. We hadn’t even found a home yet.

I'm trying to save OP the stress we went through.

TLDR: talk to your company’s HR u/1150A

ETA: In case it isn't clear, u/entropic_apotheosis, I've not addressed the tax question OP has asked. I'm simply stating they need to talk to HR about the logistics and make sure their home buying decision works with their employer.

The city of Vancouver just narrowly passed a tax levee to benefit our public schools. It worked out to a whole whopping $1.99/1k assessed on property taxes (which was replacing a $2.01 levee, so we actually gained money) and still people were acting like they were being forced to become homeless.

Never assume people would rather pay a negligible amount in taxes; even if you tell them if $1 for the whole year they will act like you're trying to be some authoritarian dictator. Absolutely exhausting.
