I wasn't in HR so I can't know for sure if they did or not. But if they ever checked my background in the 11 years I was there, they certainly didn't tell me about it.

My friends supporting government contracts all needed US security clearance anyways, which is constantly checking up on you in extreme detail.

No you cannot, the house has a working furnace and your room is not an efficiency or studio apartment it is a shared dwelling. Get a space heater. WA does not require that every room in a shared home have its own thermostat and heater/ac that's unreasonable. What you do is get everyone to agree to a higher temp for the house and use fans as they are intended or use a space heater in your room. Either way, you will use more electricity.

I agree that 1k is not negligible; i also think we are super lucky to not pay state income tax and that the state needs to make up the money somewhere. I'd rather pay this property tax increase in that framing, which is how i tend to view these things.
