More precisely, there is case law from 1933 (Culliton v. Chase) in which the State Supreme Court held that income is property and thus can only be taxed at a flat 1%. There is an argument that the court got it wrong in Culliton by misunderstanding the prior holding in Aberdeen Savings & Loan Assoc. v. Chase from 1930, as laid out here. If that argument holds water, legislative or initiative action to instate an income tax may prevail.

Talk with MILPERS and they’ll walk you through the eligibility criteria. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure “spouse on orders” is a qualifying criteria—but that’s a hazy non-expert’s partial recollection. MILPERS are the experts and will know the criteria
Edit: Never mind, this is state not mil. It looks like this is the qualifying criteria.

Thank you. My wife is an immigrant from Malaysia. She came here on a fiancé visa in 2014 and became a citizen a couple of years later.
Then, out of the blue, she wanted to join the Navy Reserves. I was kinda upset as I was Army and had been out since 94, I figured she would be better in the Army, lol.
She went to training in Chicago, where we lived when she arrived here and then she went for her Seabee training at Ft Leonard Wood, MO and stayed in the same Barracks I stayed in when I was stationed there as a MP.
Now, she is getting deployed close to where I was when I was deployed. Im not going to say exactly where she is going, but I was in Somolia. She is definitely not going there, Thank God.
In a couple of years, she will probably get deployed to Panama, I dont think she would get deployed to Korea. So she won't go everywhere I have been, lol.
She already wants our son to join the Airforce, but he is just 8, so he has some time to decide that for himself, 😆

You can get Portland roasting at Costco and it’s like $10/lb that way, but it’s not as fresh. It’s $85 for a 5lb bag from their inner SE roastery. Great coffee though.

I’m really not bothers by that kind of logic, I’ve been hearing that scare tactic my whole life.
What they might do someday, maybe isn’t my concern. Fixing our regressive tax code that disproportionately affects lower income earners as a percentage of their income is way overdue.

<oversimplification>
Due to a quirk of Washington's constitution, we can't charge income tax. So we tax in a bunch of other ways that mostly punishes poor people, while constantly getting in trouble for not paying for our schools.
Some clever politicians found a way to tax rich people on their stonks, by not calling it an income tax. This argument is mostly gibberish, but because believing it means taxing a bunch of local tech executives, people are playing along
The state supreme court, being people, also agreed. Now the State can start sending out bills to about 7000 rich people.

It was originally drafted to be $25K, when people complained, they increased it to $250K. They literally added a zero. Look at any tax, including the federal income tax. Originally it's "tax the rich" and then when the government needs more money they tax everyone.

If you’re making more than $250k/yr in capital gains I’m sure your accountant and lawyer have already explained your potential liability here.

That’s always the scare-the-poors tactic that’s used.
I’m pretty far from being worried about making $250k/yr in capital gains so my level of concern about ever being impacted is very, very low.

You could have her ask some of her leadership at the NOSC if they have any advice in specific wording on applications. I’ve also heard of issues stemming from a return-to-home from pre-deployment training for a day or two, then leaving for deployment. Best advice I have is talk to a Khaki at the NOSC. Good luck to you and your family!

If you can get to Whidbey Island perhaps you can get your hands on some locally roasted coffee from Foxglove Farms. Their 2 lb bags are around $25 so while I'm not aware if they do 5 lb bags or not, your other criteria are met. Maybe they ship, idk, but here's their info and you could contact them to check. It's really good coffee. https://whidbeyislandgrown.localfoodmarketplace.com/Producer/662bfd99-8665-4d9c-ae9a-2d634cb6d502

Maybe, maybe not.
As was stated in the article capital gains has always been taxed as income tax… it’s recognized by the federal government and all 41 state governments that tax it as income tax. The mental gymnastics involved to not consider it income tax is what can get it to the US Supreme Court. If there is a will there is a way.
