This reminds me of a YouTube video a saw recently about Japanese timekeeping before Western clocks became popular. They divides they day into an equal number of daytime hours and nighttime hours, so sunrise and sunset were always at the same time of day. The lengths of the hours varies based on the season, so daytime hours were longer than nighttime hours in the summer and shorter in the winter. People's work schedules were fixed, so they had a much longer work day in the summer than in the winter.

Honestly it sounds great to me. Not for purposes that involve precise measurement, but definitely for things like work schedules and meal times.

Bainbridge has amazing food (BaSa for lunch, blackbird bakery for breakfast). Very walkable downtown with a great bookstore (Eagle Harbor), and lots of fun shops to poke through. Very small town vibe this time of year. If you can, get tickets out to Bloedel Reserve and spend time there. A truly stunning property (there’s a bus that stops there).

Been a struggle for me for a long time too. I'm grateful when it snows because it's SO MUCH BRIGHTER. The little happy lights don't help and give me a headache but I was gifted a used panel one and it's a lot better, I keep it on the window sill to run in the mornings.

And I'm trying to do better about getting outside at lunch time, even if it's raining. It helps.

Just a couple weeks until the days start getting longer! Hang in there.

Without a car Bainbridge is going to be a lot easier. It also gives you easy access to the ferry system. From Seattle the Kitsap fast ferries can get you to Kingston (highly recommend Sourdough Willy's Pizzeria) or Bremerton if you're at all interested in seeing them. Or there are the Argosy cruises.

You might like Fort Ward or the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge. Kitsap Transit can get you to North Kitsap Heritage Park if you wanted to do some hiking there.

If you do get out here with a car some time Orcas Island is the best.

Yep, it happens. This time of year my husband and I will often take cups to tea to bed and snuggle down and read books for a while before actually going to sleep. Just going with the seasons. In the summer sometimes it feels like there's so much to do, people to see, events and places to explore that the quiet rest of winter is welcomed.

I had a neighbor once who gave me an account of a terrifying trip he did up at Index. He went into a mine, and climbed up some ladders. Eventually he got to very high ladder, and it broke beneath him, so he could only go up. He came out on a trapdoor on the top of Mt Index. There were some mountain goat tracks in the light snow cover, which showed him an unlikely way to climb down off the mountain. Whew! I ran across another neighbor later, and he told me, you didn't believe a word he said did you? Well yes I did. Hanging on every word. Turns out he was a notorious liar. Well, he got me good :). By the way, I once rappelled part way down Mt Index as part of a practice session, it is a magnificent mountain.
