During the Punk Rock hey days, a local DJ bestowed that nickname on Worcester.

If you can make the trip, you could try going up to Leominster. Wait times may be shorter, but that also depends on when you get there.
I went at lunch in November and I was in and out in less than an hour.

Hard to say because it's so dependant on when you go and how many people beat you there but I registered a new vehicle on a Friday afternoon a couple of months ago and waited maybe an hour?

Easy commute except a little back up sometimes on route 290 that goes right through the center of Worcester

Interesting. I believe the sociological term for my comment is “a joke”.

How do these cars pass state inspection? Isn't stopping this kind of stuff the reason we have inspection in the first place?

Have you tried Namaste Woo at the Public Market? They're pretty good although their hours are weird because of the public market's hours.

That's not what it means. It's a sociological term that means a place where people gather regularly outside of the home and where ever they work or have other obligations (work/school).

I was working down in Worcester that day, and by early evening the trees were so weighed down by ice they were literally exploding into toothpicks and ice cubes. It was spectacular from my safe vantage point, at the time. Honestly didn’t think that much of it until I got home to Ashburnham, and saw the neighbors fence crushed by a tree, and my backyard was a complete wreck. We lost power for only about 24 hrs. I had to drive around downed limbs and power lines to get to a grocery store that was running by generator. I hope it never happens again, and I now pay very close attention to that potential weather combination.

My most striking memory from that Storm was Southbridge not canceling school. We didn't get hit as hard as a lot of the surrounding towns but conditions outside were still very dangerous and a lot of our teachers didn't live in town so they were expected to commute from areas that were hit a lot harder than we were.
Also if you lived within a mile of school you had to walk, couldn't bus. (Or something, don't remember the actual distance.) Which was DANGEROUS.
Needless to say almost no one actually showed up. I didn't go in, even my 1/4 mile walk was kind of terrifying downhill after an ice storm, and a lot of teachers just called out. One of mine remarked that she took ten minutes to get down her frozen steps, hit the pavement, immediately busted ass, and said fuck this and called in too.
I played a lot of Fallout 3 cause we were lucky enough to not lose power.

I'll throw out Technocopia. We're a makerspace, so a member-supported community workshop. Good community of creative folks, woodworkers, hobbyists, a few fine artists, etc. If you're interested, come by on a Thursday night during Open Hack when anyone's welcome to come check out the space, work on a project, and hang out.

I had friends in Princeton at the time, and they were without power for 15 days. It was a truly surreal situation

We managed to get a generator, somehow. I do not remember how my father did it. It was only enough to power the fridge, freezer, and the pellet stove.
Luckily, we have a gas stove, so we could still use that without the electric starter.

You'll be driving through the core of the city on I-290 all the time.
In the afternoons, going south it is backed up from about 3:30 - untill 6:00 PM going Southwest towards Auburn. (01606 is the Northeast side of the city.) I can't speak to what the morning commute is like coming Northeast.
Do not put too much stock on the people telling you to flee towards the suburbs. I moved to the city in 2014 (01609) and have loved it here. It is nice to be able to walk to places when we want.
But if you do choose to look outside the city limits, then given your work zipcode, then West Boylston or Holden would be better choices. The burbs to the east (Shrewsbury, Northborogh, etc...) are much more expensive.
