Exactly! People looking for jobs go where the money is. Worcester was advertising plow jobs like crazy since early fall. Not many people want to work for Worcester.

Some people act like plowing a road is one of the easiest jobs you could do. They don't understand you can't just get into a plow truck and do the job without any knowledge or training. They're probably the same people who think running a combine is super easy to do as well.

Let’s further that understanding with the fact that Worcester pays an embarrassingly low hourly rate for plow drivers, and the city refused to offer the plow drivers more when asked in the fall (certain other city departments always get more money but that’s not for this discussion). Additionally, surrounding towns offer great plow pay, so where would you go if you were a plow driver with at least one huge truck to fuel and maintain?

TL;DR: the city fumbled the bag on what should’ve been an easy snow season because of money.

Aside from finding a guy who has a band mill and works out of his garage, there's really nothing particularly close by. Rugby/Downes & Reader in Stoughton, Highland in Brentwood NH, Forest Products in Greenfield, Rex or McIlvain in CT if youre buying quantity. For smaller quantity and really good (and pricey) quality I'd go to Forest.

edit: all these places sell in the rough - your options for dimensioned might be somewhat limited (I always bought rough, so not entirely sure).

Absolutely. Not just the town I work for, but the town I live in - My taxes are higher than my mortgage. The mismanagement of funds is atrocious. The town I live in installed a 6.5 million dollar astroturf field but the kids can’t attend school because the high school roof leaks. Or our new million dollar fucking pickle ball court but can’t afford to do a total reclaim of some of the worst roads in town, where there is literally No remaining pavement.

One of the main reasons my department is so short staffed is because we haven’t been reclassified or been given a raise in 6 years. My master diesel mechanic is leaving because he can make more money flipping burgers at McDonald’s than BEING A MASTER DIESEL mechanic. I can’t get bodies in trucks because folks can’t afford to feed their families without a second job, but this job doesn’t allow you to have a second job. It’s just awful, the only way to fix it is to be active and vocal in your local government, but even if you are you get ignored because the seniors value the pickle ball courts over the other stuff because they are the loudest and have the most time on their hands.

Okay, I’m done ranting now lol 😮‍💨
