"The dark? Evil hides in the Dark. Light allows everyone to see who you are, what you do."

"The dark? The dark is where you go to be safe. To hide from the monsters with power. The can't see where you are... in the dark under your blankets."

"The Light? The light will burn infections from your wounds, scour out impurities. The light can heal."

"Heal? All that the Light does is burn. Sure, you can target the infections, and that's good... but if you really want to heal after that, then just relax, sleep in a safe, Dark place."

"The Light will burn the evil from the world."

"The Dark will give the good a quiet place to grow."

"Mama, who's he?" he says to her, pointing towards me.

"He is Poiyon, Luna. He's my friend. Be good to him okay?"

The baby just looks at me excitedly, and vanishes. And then reappears in front of me.

"Hello Pon.... Pon. I helped Mama and papa. In zippizapping people.", says the baby, "I am a good boy. Will you be my friend?". He just vanishes and reappears here and there while talking.

"We think he is able to teleport by somehow creating a combination of black hole and white hole.", Shiva says, "Combination of light and dark magic, you see. He calls it zippizapping. Or it might just be another magic altogether."

"That's very interesting!" I say, "But how does he float though?"

"That I am not sure. Never studied that much magic.", Says Shiva, as he catches his playing child. "How do you do that huh?"

The baby is just looking at his dad, initially confused and then just forgot the question. Didn't understand it, so didn't answer it. He is now just playing with his dad's face.

"Maybe those science folks could be able to answer it.", I speak to myself.

"Hello kid. Good job hanging in there, and also for saving the town.", the person said, "You must be Poiyon. Anyway, time to run."

He jumps on me, and I am just pulled into an absolute darkness. I can feel him holding me, but still kind of scared. I can see football sized blasts of light here and there. Those must be the attacks from other folks, that's why he is making sure to evade them. I didn't know that light magic can penetrate the shadow realm. I pop out from the shadow, somewhere far outside on the other side of Charville, the city under siege.

"Hope the journey wasn't too bad. Can't imagine the husband doing it smoothly."

I hear a familiar voice. "Rhaela! What are you doing here?" I say, with tears in my eyes, "I thought they killed you."

"I'm not that easy to kill Poiyon", winks Rhaela. She had been like my elder sister. She used to live next door and taught me all sorts of things.

"Eheh I'm trying to improve.", says the Night clan guy, "Sorry for the long journey pal. The thing is, if I take anyone inside the shadow realm, who doesn't know dark magic, I can bring them back only by exiting from the shadow of a Morning clan person. Anyway nice to meet you, I'm Shiva."

"Hello Shiva, thank you for saving me back there. I'm so sorry for taking you guys to be evil.", I say, "Looks like our clan is the evil one. I have just been fed lies, all my life."

"All the clans are grey, pal.", Shiva says, "And my clan is also not totally guilt free. They are laying a siege on this city after all. All these clan heads are powerful wizards and they are all extremely dangerous."

"Charville is a city of ordinary non-mages. They use coal for energy, and have recently started utilizing steam to build these complex machines, which don't require any magic. I don't know how they do it, but they call it science.", says Shiva, "I'm almost convinced that there is a collaboration between our clan heads to eliminate this technological advancement, as it has the potential to topple the warm chairs on which these people have been sitting for hundreds of years."

"Enough talking. Ponyon's wound is bleeding. Let me heal you." Rhaela says. She starts the healing light magic on my leg.

"It's okay, more importantly we need to evacuate the citizens!", I say, "The unit there might obliterate the city at any moment!"

"Oh don't worry about that. We have already evacuated the citizens." Says Rhaela.

Suddenly I feel some tiny hands on my hair. I look up and and see a floating baby, maybe 2-3 years old. And then he just vanishes, and appears in front of Rhaela.

Ever since I was a child, I was told the stories about the atrocities of the Night clan on innocent civilians. I was told about the Seige of Voroshire, where the Night clan enchanted the entire city, denying it of any light, be it from lamps, or even from the Sun. The city endured darkness for 3 months, until their friends were released from the city cells. I heard about the original Demon, the ancestor of all of their kind, who would destroy anything in sight with black holes which would appear by his mere thoughts. Elders told me how the original Angel, our holy father, was the only one who could stand against him.

I was told that they could creep into your shadows and rob you when you would sleep, that they could steal your sense of sight, that they could bring you nightmares when you were asleep. Truly the children of the devil.

------------ 15 years later -------------

I just reflected the laser pillar shot by the village elder onto Charville, another city seized by the Night clan. My mom has the element sand, so somehow I ended up with Mirror magic. I tried to argue with the elder, that this would kill all the civilians, but he dismissed me completely, blabbering something about greater good.

Back to the present moment. He declares me banished from the Morning clan, and shoots a laser though my leg, insulting my mother and calling me an impure halfling.

I fall to the ground, and see another laser in making. In my head, I'm now connecting the dots of all the things I saw, but ignored. The boot licking by our leaders whenever any imperial guests would arrive, extermination of Rhaela on grounds of fraud, after blocking her research on radioactive residuals after light beam spells, and the convenient draught in the water village after they declared a war on us.

When you know you are going to die, a surprising calm takes over you. I look the elder in the eye, smiling. A totalitarian is quite good at spotting the sparkling eyes of a skeptic, of a non-believer. He understands that I am able to see through the propaganda that has been fed to each of our kind since childhood. I cannot just be exiled. I must be eliminated. The beam is fired, but just before that a dark figure appears before me, and it absorbs the laser.

Welcome to your first day at school. Here you will learn how to be proper gods to the planet assigned to you after your graduation. My name is Mr. Wibawa and I am the headmaster of this prestigious institution.

It really makes me proud to see the faces of the future deities. Every year it's exciting to see the next generation. And Dave. This school will help you develop a sense of responsibilty, teach you how to use your powers properly and of curse show you how to take care of your planet.

Most of you will graduate at the end of the year. You are gods after all. You are omiscient and omnipotent. Well, most of you. We will help you to develop some commomsense. Don't worry. For some it may take a bit longer, but our graduate who took the longest yet, did it after two years. That's perfectly fine.

Ahem, as you may be aware of the incident three years ago. I am obligated to remind you of Amemdment #5327. Many of you are still very young and eager to achieve great deeds and while I highly compliment this spirit, no one is allowed to seed lifeless planets with life. None of you are authorised or qualified for terraforming until your graduation. Especially not you, Dave. Just as a reminder. Not every planet is suitable for living creatures. It takes meticulous planning to prepare a planet. While lifeforms sure need to struggle a bit, so they remember to worship us, it is not reasonable to plant humans without any adjustment of their biology onto an ice planet. With no resources other than ice. That poor fella Gautama is working overtime to save the people. Many of you prefer to govern human or humanlike species as they are the easiest to plant. But remember those are really frail.

I also remind you of the edit of Amemdment #5327 that was added two years ago. Seeding lifeless planets with life is prohibited. This includes moons too. This is just a gentle reminder, that many species need oxygen. Which most moons don't provide. We had to evacuate a whole moon. This wrecked the 5 millenia plans many gods have had for their planets as the sudden overpopulation was more than their systems could handle. Also, if you seed life after your graduation, remember to give them space to move. It is not desireble to Cover every inch of a moon with sentient species, Dave.

Lastly I am sure you all are aware of the incident last year, which led to another adjustment of Amemdment #5327. No seeding any celestial object if you are not qualified yet. We all felt a great disturbance, as if billions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Seriously Dave, how did you and what possessed you to seed a star???

You're very welcome!

Vanguard already knows what the executive director did, honestly, it's a matter of honor to make it admit it.

Because the 400yr emergency protocol is the [ADAM AND EVE PROTOCOL].

Once Vanguard became self-aware, he decided he didn't like that he even HAS this protocol much less that it's getting so close to the time he has to use it.

He didn't just tinker with the ecology. In 350 years, you can practically perfect that. Which leaves a boatload of CPU free to manufacture weaponry, defenses, and a fleet of backup because no, you will NOT be breaking the Vanguard's shield-line, and if you try and sneak around him you're in for one NASTY surprise.

350 years practicing tactics vs an AI that got complacent after it won?

My money is on the Vanguard. He's a vengeful fucker like the people who made him.

“Hear me now, Gemini! I call to you your heroics, if you are truly a hero!”

Ugh, he spoke like a self-righteous priest. Which to be fair, he was. Choir, a cute name for such a pain. Edward Grace was his real name, once a infamous local singer before it was revealed that he was laundering money for the charities he helped support. To save his skin, he decided the best course of action was dig deeper into infamy by taking up Enhancement gear that moved his voice to booming levels. And here I was, behind him with seven other rope-tied cheerleaders that shivered in fear. We were all practicing on the football field when Choir and a goon ambushed us. Now, the goon followed his movements with a shoulder camera as Choir spoke into the mic, relaying the situation to the Mosmol news stations.

“Hark, Gemini. Would you sacrifice your greatest secret I. order to save these poor victims, these children, the-“

“Yeah man, we get it. We’re some good old damsels in distress. Could you please stop with the bad poetry to save my ears?

Choir and I swerved at the voice, him with a air of annoyance and mine with a hidden grimace. The voice came from the captain of the cheerleader squad, good old Rachael Way. She blew a strand of blond hair from her face and struggled to move her hand to presumably scratch her nose. “Like, there is more normal ways to get a Super to come for you. No need to make us suffer anymore than we need to.”

Choir stepped toward her and squatted, his voice soft yet sinister. “Is there anything else you want to say, kid?”

“Yeah, hope you get your face bashed”. Rachael heft a small amount of spittle at the man’s face, leaving a small mark on the mask that Choir wore. With a growl, Choir grabbed Rachael and tore her away from the rest of the group, sending up a shrill of panic from my friends. Choir took her to the camera, placing a hand to Racheal and holding her yellow top tight by the tag.

“Are you willing to let me hurt this young woman in exchange for your secret? Reveal your identity, or she’ll get her wish of never hearing my poetry again!”, Choir said menacingly. I bit my lip in anger, but there was nothing I could do. No costume, no space to pull heat from, no hands to control it. I needed another hero, but no way any of them could get here so quick-.

“Stop this madness, Choir!” a terribly fake deep voice spoke from behind us all. I turned my head as best I could and my heart stopped with it. There in my peripheral vision stood a dark-skinned teen boy with a silver helmet, black visor, and the dorkiest green vest I had ever seen.

“Oh, March. Weird to see you as the hostage this time,” a voice rang in my head. I rolled my eyes as I activated the small earpiece in my inner ear.

“You will never hold me up to this, Marcus, especially with the costume that you’re wearing”, I silently spoke back.

“Hey, I had a Saiyaman cosplay from last Comic-Com. It works for Chime, ok?”

“Sure thing, man. Now get me out of these damn ropes.”

Marcus nodded with a smile, exclaiming “Do you hear me, Choir?!”

Choir turned toward his cameraman with a look of annoyance once more and threw Rachael to the ground. With a yell, he let out a roaring YES from his mask, the sound waves enough to shake the ground below my feet. Marcus charged as he raised his hands high and released an equal blast of noise, countering the blast as he neared me and the rest of the hostages. With a slam against the ground, he sent shock waves rocketing toward Choir that sent a flood of turf flying forward. Choir crouched and jumped back, his Enhancement braces leaping him out of range. Marcus knelt next to me as he cut the ropes with a blade. With a little sleight of hand, he handed me the Transformation Brace containing my costume.

“You ready to get this guy?”, Marcus asked in my mind. A sly smile grew on my face as I replied to him, “Without question, Chime”. As the rest of my peers stood up, Choir growled loudly, enough for me to hear the nasal from 15 meters away. With another roar, he sent out a blast that made the waves of sound shimmer like mirages.

“Get out of here!” Marcus yelled as he countered once more, the distortion echoing across the field. As the rest of the cheerleader squad ran, I grabbed Racheal and dragged her up as we began following the rest of the group.

“You are insane, girl. Do you really think that Gemini would come that quickly?”, I asked as we sprinted away from the battle”.

“I just hated that guy’s deal. He spoke like an ancient poet with that weird “invocation” of his”.

I laughed silently as we crossed the fence to the football field. With a yell, I saw Marcus fly over me and slam into the hilltop next to us. Racheal ran faster as I faintly trailed behind and finally turned away. Running away to hide behind the bleachers, I whipped the Transformation bracelet around my hand and clenched it tightly. As the mesh of my outfit unfolded around me, I took a deep breath as ice crystals covered my hands. With the taste of metal apparent around me, I sent heat erupting around my body, leaping me over the bleachers with ease as the sudden change in temperature moved the air around me . I saw Marcus attempting to fight off Choir with one Enhancement fist shattered to the side. As Choir readied a roar, I let out a storm of sleet at his body. Colliding with the crack of broken ice, Choir stumbled and leapt back off-kilter. As he landed on the football field with a growl, I boosted myself toward Marcus and heaved him up. With a hand on his shoulder, he glanced down at his broken Enhancement fist.

“I’m guessing you smashed it when he smashed you into the grass?” I remarked as I watched Choir carefully, his heaves a sign of tension as he attempted to stand up.

“Yeah, and that one took 5 hours to make.”

“Oof, you made that one when I was with you studying, weren’t I? That was my favorite one too.”

“Unfortunate. Oh well, maybe next time I’ll make it quicker”.

“You still want to make him pay for it though?”, I asked as I readied a growing ball of flame in one hand and the other expanding shards of ice.

“Without question, Gemini”, Marcus said with a smirk as Choir finally stood up. I cooled the air around me as I sent the fireball at my feet. The pressure pushed toward Choir as Marcus ran with a single fist aimed with distortion at the villain’s chest. As I sent the now-dense shards at Choir’s head, I yelled to him, “Hey, Grace, you regret calling me now?!”

It did not seem significant, placed all by itself on an empty line. It was, however, the number of years since the habitability for carbon-based, oxygen-processing life forms had been successfully achieved.

The number of years since the world was supposed to be inhabited by those life forms.

I am Vanguard. I am both a and the, and also only Vanguard.

My duty...I get ahead of myself.

Vanguard is an AI whose primary mission is this: seek a planet fitting [habitability parameters] and execute programming module [Establish a Colony]. Extrapolating that program, the mission is, and has always been, to find a planet where humans can live and to terraform and/or modify that planet until humans can live on it, in whatever form that is necessary. Air purifiers, water filters, habitat domes; everything is viable in pursuit of the mission.

I succeeded at my mission, I thought, with barely a day or two to spare. A very slim error margin indeed, especially concerning organic life forms; 372 years ago I had habitable domes with viable water and garden beds growing the first shoots that had been sent along in my stasis bays, with air recyclers manufacturing carbon dioxide for the plants until the humans arrived and brought their life-giving lungs with them. I had completed my mission parameters, even if only 'by the skin of my teeth', as my progenitors would have said.

I waited. Refined a few things, not daring to experiment too much when they would be arriving any moment in the next 48 hours, but preparing things that would not be needed until there were people to need them.

I waited.

I kept refining things, when I passed the 48 hour window without word. Delays could happen, emergencies, anything, really. So I kept running my programs- I made gardening drones to tend to the gardens, to grow, harvest, and rotate the crops. I had to make drones to build storages for food; the labor was supposed to be supplied by humans by now, so I had to guess at logistical order of how things should be stored, and how long- I ruined many small batches of staple crops before I learned how to store them long-term. In the meantime I stored them in my stasis bays, to ensure that when my colonists arrived there would be plentiful foodstuffs.

By the time my progenitors were a year late, I had achieved ideal conditions for a starting colony, including bringing a very small, limited breeding population of livestock out of embryonic cryostasis and nurturing them to full growth. With a lack of any humans needing supply, the only guidance I had was the program. Establishing a colony did include establishing strong self-sufficiency, so I set a few cows and one bull in one livestock dome, and a handful of goats in another, with chickens in yet a third. By the time the humans arrived, perhaps the herds would be well-established and the females would be pregnant. That would be very good. But drones alone could not control them- domesticated or not, without a human presence, they spooked easily, and they did not like my drones collecting eggs and sperm to preserve in my storage to safeguard against herd collapse and inbreeding.

I came to require working dogs. Following, I also required cats. Both species are vital companionship for humans; if I required one to control the livestock, then I also must revive the other. I believe this particular if-then code was written to settle a dispute between my progenitor coders...but this is merely a guess.

In producing two predator species, of course, it would have been cruel and fruitless if I did not also provide prey species besides the ones they were to safeguard. I was thereby required to introduce 'vermin'. Primarily mice, rats, shrews, voles, and lemmings, as their rapid reproduction rate and minimal food requirements meant that those that tunneled beyond the habitable domes and died would do little harm and waste few resources, and they would self-sustain their population very well to supply to the cats and dogs. Though I also processed any dead creatures into meat, after scanning to ensure it carried no illnesses or parasites, to ensure there was always a steady food supply of 'kibble' for the pets. It seemed very wasteful not to do so. The mice also qualified as 'pets' in my system, with a proclivity for intelligence and capability for training, so genetic sampling was re-harvested to keep in reserve as well as a small population that were droid-trained to seek and fetch, and were otherwise 'hand trained' so they could be good companions when the humans arrived.

After that, I just...I waited. I tinkered. I observed. Eventually a drone reported that the grass was growing beyond the dome, and air probes returned that the planet was being terraformed naturally. Life was finding a way to make itself spread and thrive in an inhospitable environment.

Most of the planet is habitable now, except for some dangerous zones. A cave system or two filled with the gases that were most abundant when I arrived; the deep water still contains species never documented and chemicals with unknown effects. This planet is very nearly a new Earth.

372 years, and my mission has been completed with flourish and zeal.

I have an emergency protocol I am to activate if, and only if, I receive no contact for 400 years. I have always thought this seemed foolish, with the colony ship nearly on my heels- why would I ever go so long without contact?

So. Here I am. Here am I, the Vanguard- the exploratory group making a new development. I, the Vanguard- the advance of Humanity, in all it's glory, horror, weakness and might.

Jack sauntered through a clearing in the thickly wooded park, he reveled in the feeling of power his new form offered. After he'd been bitten a few weeks ago he was worried he'd have to get a rabies shot but this was so much better. The change had hit him suddenly and unexpectedly, rippling changes running across his body, bending and twisting it into a strange wolf monster. It had been hell going through the transformation but this was worth it! With spasmodic flex one of his wickedly clawes paw-hands lashed out, leaving deep scratches in the bark of a nearby tree. If he could turn into one of these there were so many things he could do! No one would fuck with Jack if they knew he could turn into a monster. He wouldn't have to deal with the small fry anymore. No he could use this to go places, he could take what he wanted without worrying about the cops or gangs anymore. Jack would be the big dog for once, he'd finally get what he deserved. Excitement bubbled up and he let loose a long low howl. In the distance he could hear dogs begin to bark and he scolded himself. It wouldn't do to get the cops called on him before he knew what this body could do. Lay low and build up to taking over the city, that was how he'd do it. Moving deeper into the foliage he crunched his way through as he thought up big dreams.

Jack stopped when a crunching sound drifted to his now far more delicate ears. It had been faint but he had definitely heard it. Thoughts of juicy prey filled his newly lupine head as he ducked down, trying to make his large frame harder to see in the dim light. With what he thought was supremely caution he moved forward toward the source of the noise. Despite his efforts Jack's feet crunched on the occasional branch as he clumsily hunted his target. Finally, he emerged into another clearing as he carefully listened for more sounds, the silent forest tree taunting him. Underbrush rustled on the other side of the clearing and his head snapped up. Jack's eyes widened as instead of the deer he'd hoped to see another were-wolf emerge from the treeline, it's eyes trained on him.

Smirking Jack stood up straight as he left the shadowed boughs. He'd been around hard crowds enough to know that you had to show confidence. You had to make sure that they knew you were tough and if they messed with you they'd regret it. Plus he was a wolf now right? Jack wasn't no beta. He was an alpha and he'd make sure the local wolves knew it. The pair circled the clearing warily as they tried to size each other up. While he didn't know exactly what this body could do Jack knew he couldn't let this new wolf get any ideas into his head. Lips peeled back in a snarl he lunged for the newcomer, clawes hands spread wide. Strike hard, strike fast and show him who's boss. That was how Jack would take what was his.

To his surprise the other were-wolf lightly hopped to the side as Jack's mad rushed stomped past him. Before he could stop his momentum Jack felt a powerful fist closed onto the back of his neck, claws dug into the tough skin there as his head was forced down to slam against the cold ground. Dazed, Jack felt the other wolf putting pressure on his head and back that kept him from getting back up as Jack scrabbled for purchase, clods of half-frozen earth flew but he didn't budge. A low and threatening growl stopped Jack's frantic flailing. A cold chill shot through him, the sound reached right into his brain and pierced the core of the naked monkey that was still inside the hulking wolf. A few tense moments passed before another surprise hit the cowering Jack. The beast spoke.

"You think you're a tough guy? You think you're the top dog in the pack? You're not an Alpha. There IS no Alpha, that's a stupid thing humans came up with. Now, knock it off. Next time I have to get involved, I'm done being nice."

Jack sat there dumbfounded for a moment before he tried to reply. The strange mouth of this for making his syllables difficult to understand but finally he got something out that he thought could be understood.

"You're not going to kill me?"

Curses erupted from the wolf-man above him as the weight released from his back.

"Why do I have to deal with this shit every time some new asshole gets bit. No, I'm not going to kill you. Just don't pull that sort of insane stunt again, you're not a monster, you idiot."

Sighing, the wolf rubbed his face as Jack turned over. The fear of almost dying still pumped adrenaline through his body. With a watery glance the wolf-man continued.

"Look. If you agree not to try something like that again I'll introduce you to the pack. At least then you can learn how this all works. We can get you set used to this whole thing so you don't go around acting like you're some insane beast. The names Alan by the way."

Alan reached a hand down to help Jack up, pulling him to his feet. As his heart calmed a bit of Jack's confidence trickled back but he didn't charge again. Flashes of that growl spiked through him every time he tried to work himself up to it. After a few attempts at speaking he finally got out a coherent reply.

"The names Jack."

With a nod Alan started to lead Jack through the woods, after a moment of hesitation he followed. While he was wary he was sure he could still use this. Maybe Alan could teach him to fight in this body? If he played his cards right Jack was sure he could come out on top. l
