I look at the knights curiously, being careful not to send the wrong message. "What do you mean?"

"You just went out into the plaza as usual, then we lost sight of you! That's not uncommon, but what WAS uncommon is you not heading back to the castle by sunset!"

I look out the window of the inn. It really IS getting late... if the king is missing... I down the rest of my drink. "Ok, I need to be honest with you, as we won't get anywhere if we start keeping secrets. I'm not the king, I'm a shapeshifter, about the only person who knew that is the lovely bartender who pretended not to know. I dress like his majesty regularly for free drinks. That's about it."

The knights look at each other confused. "But... then..."

One of them raises a weapon. "You do anything to him? You holding him hostage?"

I hold my hands up. "I would never! Our kind don't waste time, if I were going to do anything to him I'd have done it AGES ago! We do our best to keep our secret safe!"

Another knight clears his throat. "So... why would you tell us?"

"Because I had two options: pretend to ACT like someone I'm not, taking on a task which I have no clue what to do, or tell the truth and offer my help. Believe me, I'm worried about his majesty too. Are the citizens aware?"

"They shouldn't be..."

I smile warmly. "Ok, I'm sure you all know that a panicked kingdom is bad. Here's what I'm thinking: allow me to take the throne just for the night, I won't make any decisions or anything, we just need to fool EVERYONE into believing the king is safe. Then, in the morning, I'll decide to 'have an adventure', and I'll search day and night for him. I won't rest until he's safe."

The knights look at each other, then nod. "We don't have much choice. We all need to trust each other. But we won't hesitate to kill you if we suspect any attempt at taking the throne for real. Understood?"

"Perfectly."

The knights escort me back to the castle. I make sure to eat well and get an early night's sleep. I'll need to be fully prepared for the following day. I look out the window of the king's chambers. "I'll risk my own life to save you, your majesty. I promise I'll do whatever it takes to get you back to your kingdom safe."

> They do give things up by transforming, and many will take steps to make up for those losses; some wear armor, or carry a big honkin' weapon, because they feel vulnerable at human scale.

Pick your poison: a human-shaped dragon carrying an M2 like humans carry AR-15s, or a dragon in their default firebreathing form, with air support if they feel like it. Near enough to BRRRRT for close-in work.

According to this research site N!S!F!W! that bard could be in for a really good time. So long (ahem) as he doesn't mind a good stretching, some of those dragons are kind of big.

Death stared at the two dice. The two dice stared right back at her, a single unblinking dot on each.

"Oh, bad luck," I said. "But that makes up for the double sixes that you rolled last turn."

"So what does this mean?" Death asked.

"You didn't quite make the charge," I explained. "You were three inches away, so you needed to roll a 3 or higher over the two dice.

Death regarded me with baleful eyes. "You told me this was an unfailable charge."

"Almost unfailable," I corrected.

"Hrmph," Death said. "I'm not sure I like this game. It lacks... inevitability."

"It's considered bad form to complain about your dice rolls," I said. "We all meet with bad luck sometimes."

"I have met Luck many times," Death said, "and She is neither good nor bad, but merely perverse. Nevertheless, I shall be having words with Her."

We both regarded the table in silence for a few moments. Then I cleared my throat. "You don't have any command points for a re-roll-"

"Convenient," Death grumbled

"-so it's the end of your turn. And since you went second, then you score at the end of this turn-"

"Another rule?" Death muttered.

"-and you didn't manage to knock me off that objective, so you only score another 5 victory points. So that puts us at a final score of 64 to 63. To me."

"You won by one point?" Death asked.

"Technically I should have an extra ten points for a fully painted army," I said. "But since you're a beginner, I didn't want to unfairly penalize you for playing with gray plastic."

"I see," said Death with awful finality. "You are being magnanimous."

"It was a fun game," I added quickly, "and you did great for somebody who hadn't played before."

I offered her my hand. She looked at it oddly, and then, hesitantly, shook it. To my surprise, the flesh did not fall from my bones, and to my even greater surprise, her hand was warm.

"Let us play again," Death said. "And this time, let us play with 2000 points a piece."

"Strike Force?" I said. "Are you sure? Those games can take a while."

"Were you going somewhere?" she asked.

I looked around, at the endless Halls of the Dead that stretched into darkness. I looked up, past the high vaulted arches to where distant stars and unknown planets twinkled above us. All things considered, it was an appropriately atmospheric setting for a game of Warhammer. There were some players in my gaming club who would have been dying to play in this kind of environment.

"No," I said. "I don't suppose I am. Alright, let's reset the table..."
